John William NEGUS

NOTE:
   The obituary said their were seven children by him and his first wife Flora.  Two of the children died before John and are not named in the obituary.  Order of the children listed was determined by the order in the obituary.

Letter written to Annie Jane Cottle Stock:
    John W. Negus was born Aug 21, 1871 in Whaddon, Cambridgeshire, England; died in a Logan Hospital Dec 6, 1957.  He was the son of William and Emily Wayment Negus.  His grandfather and grandmother joined the Church before her mother was born.  Before the Civil War started in America, they started sending their family to America one at a time.  His father and mother, the last of the family to come over, left there on Aug 31, 1882, his 11th birthday.  The journey took
21 days, 10 on the ocean, 1 in New York and 10 More on the train.  They didn't get off the train in all that time but bought food from people who would come aboard at the stops.  They arrived in Ogden, Sep 21, 1881.    At the age of 12 he started hurding sheep.  On Nov 1, 1895, he married Flora Elizabeth Cottle in the Salt Lake Temple and left Plain City for Bear Lake in a covered wagon pulled by 4 horses.  She died Oct 4, 1926.  To this union, were born 7 children, 2 of whom preceded him in death.    He then married Alilce Kemp Anderson Cottle, Sept 15, 1927.    He was a High Priest on record in the Logan 3 Ward, Cache Stake.    He lived in Garden City 48 years where he was engaged in farming and stock raising; then he moved to Logan where he has lived for the past 13 years.   He was preceeded in death by his parents, one brother and 3 sisters.    He is survived by his wife, the following sons and daughters: Mr. Wm (Lucille) Payne of Ogden, John Edward of St. Charles, Mrs. Wilford (Beatrice) Hansen and Wm Lance of Garden City and Emily Elizabeth of Logan and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Martha Stoker of Shayne, Wyo., Mrs. Parley (Maud) East of Warren, Utah and Wm Negus of Ogden.    He has 34 living grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildrein, also the following surving step children: Charles Cottle of Salt Lake, Sterling Cottle of Ogden and Mrs. Lowell (Charlotte) Pope of San Diego, Calif.
