John Otto was born at Sharpsburg, November 25, 1802. As a young man heworked as a farm hand and sometimes at his father's tailor shop. He wasmarried first, on 29 December 1825, to Dorcas Miller, and settled on asmall farm near South Mountain, Washington, Maryland. In 1830 he movedto another small farm near where the Burnside Bridge crosses theAntietam. His wife died on this farm 24 Dec 1845.
John and Dorcas had 5 children, Mary Ann, David Franklin, Ann Catherine,John Miller, and Daniel Grove Otto.
He married, second, Catharine Gardenhour, daughter of Jacob and BelindaClem Gardenhour, who was born at Belinda Springs, 18 October 1805. Theirmarriage occured on 29 March 1849. Catharine Gardenhour died 6 May 1867in Sharpsburg, Washington, Maryland, USA. John Otto lived with his son,David Franklin Otto, until his death 8 Dec 1884 in Sharpsburg.
