Johann Peter BERTHOLD
Peter Barkdoll, who arrived in Philadelphia on September 16, 1748 aboardthe English ship "Patience", Captain John Brown commanding, was probablythe immigrant ancestor of the Antietam Barkdolls. The Captain's listmentions, along with 122 other me, "Peter Bartol" age 24 years. On alist of signatures of these passesgers reproduced in Strassburger andHinke's Pennsylvania German Pioneers there is found "Peter Bergtoll."Nothing more is heard of this man until he appears on a manuscriptlabeled, "Census of York County", 1762. This information indicates that"Peter Barkdol" lived in York township and that he owned no real estate.A tax list from 1769 indicated that he still lived in York Twn. and stillowned no land. His name was also spelled "Barthold". Records from 1779and 1780 list his occupation as "weaver" and show that he owned two cowsand paid a tax of three pounds four shillings seven pence. Census records indicate that Peter, Jr. was born about 1755. Records areunclear about birth and death dates for Peter Sr., or information aboutPeter, JR. How many children Peter Sr. might have had is not clear.
