Obituary Notice printed 7 Dec 1921 in the Record Harald Aged Woman Passes Away Mrs. Anna M. Gardenhour, aged 92, Dies this morning at Ringgold Home Mrs. Anna Margaret Gardenhour, widow of Francis Marion Gardenhour, awell-know resident of the Ringgold District for many years, died thismorning at 5:10 o'clock, aged nearly 72 (?) years. The deceased has been ill since last May, and bedfast since the last dayof July. She was a member of the Lutheran church at Greensburg, Md. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Davis Beaver, Charles G.Gardenhour, Mrs. Ira Stouffer, all of Leitersburg; Luther G. and GeorgeGardenhour, both of Waynesboro; Alvin Gardenhour, Ringgold; HarveyGardenhour, Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. Joseph Hess, Five Points; Mrs. EmmertBarnhart, Wingerton, Pennsylvania; and Miss Eura, at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: John Barkdoll,Waynesboro; William Barkdoll, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. Jacob Snowbergerand Mrs Danie Sheffler, both of Waynesboro; Mrs. Clara Keckler, Hoover'sMill; Mrs. Amos Shockey, Ringgold. Funeral services Sunday afternoon at the Union Church, Ringgold, Rec.Hesse and Muck officiating. Interment at Smithburg.
From the obituary notice in a Waynesboro, Pa. paper on Frisday, September12, 1963: Mrs. M. Elsie Hess, 78, wife of Joseph R. Hess, died at 9:10 a.m. at herhome in Zullinger. She had been in failing health for several years andcritcally ill for the past two months. On August 5 she was admitted to the Waynesboro Hospital and underwent anoperation, returning home two weeks ago. She was born near Ringgold, Md. April 12, 1885, a daughter of the lateFrancis and Anna M. Barkdoll Gardenhour. Her early life was spent inRinggold and following her marriage February 6, 1906, moved toWaynesboro,later moving to the Five Forks area where they farmed. For the past 15years she lived in Zullinger. She was a member of Solomon's LutheranChurch at Grindstone Hill, the Ladies Aid Society, and the Golden LinkSunday School class. In addition to her husband, she is survived by these children: Mrs. PearlWishard, Waynesboro R.D. 3; Mrs. John Stine and Mrs. Glenn Stover, bothof Waynesboro; Mrs. Hugh Wishard, Zullinger; Mrs. Charles Burkholder,Corapolis; J. Austin Hess, Waynesboro R.D. 2; Mrs. Earl Hoover, MontAlto; Mrs. Charles Spitzer, Alexandria, Va.; Melvin Hess, Chambersburg;Mrs. Marion Bonebrake, Jr., Hagerstown R.D. 1; 27 grandchildren and 11great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters, George Gardenhour andMrs. Emmert Barnhart and Mrs. May Beaver.
