Daniel Hill died at East Hartford, Connecticut, Dec 23, 1782.Administration was granted upon his estate, Jan. 24, 1783. Theproceedings of the Probate Court show that his widow was named Mabel anddisclosee the names of Levi, Nathan, Reuben, John, Joshua, and Moses ashis sons and Sarah of his daughters. The administrators were his sonLevi and Thomas Risley, both of Glastonbury, and the appraisers wereSilas Hills and Henry Treat.

The probate records were interesting. One is not sure what is happeningwith Mabel. She does show in the 1790 census as do Levi, Nathan, andReuben. Her household does have some minor children but definitely notall of the children. It is hard to explain the situation. Did thebrothers have a falling out?
In any event, something unusual happened. Jesse is conceiveably inNathan's household in the 1790 census. Normally the surviving widowwould have taken responsibility for the minor children with the oldestboy Levi directed to take care of the financial matters. That didn'thappen. There were outside guadians and Nathan acted as a guardian. Theestate must have had considerable assets.

Nathan's will, probated 28 Dec 1811, mentions wife Jerusha; daughters,Hannah, Cytha, Sara, Anna, Hulda, and sons Nathan, George, Samuel, andDavid. (No Jesse)

From History of Washington Co., New YOrk 1737-1838 by Everts and Ensign,1878, Page 404:
"Nathan Hills came from Hartford, Ct. about 1793 and lived in the town ofHartford, Washington Co. where he was a farmer. He had nine children, ofwhom George was born in 1789 in Hartford, Ct. and came with his father. He farmed with his father until he was aged about 25, when he removedfirst to Granville, then to Hebron. He married Polly, daughter of StephenReynolds of Granville by whom he had 10 children. He died in 1874."

Some have insisted that Jesse Hills, born abt 1774, was a son of Nathan.Nathan, born about 1760, would have been only 14 years of age at the timeof Jesse's birth. While this is not impossible, it would be unusual forthe times. Nothing has been found to verify this statement and surelysomething would have been written about such a birth. Our ancestors werecontrolled by the church and nothing got past the church fathers, especially an illigitimate child. If there had been a marriage, this toowould have been noted. Although some agree that Jesse was a relative, more probably a brother, he is listed as a brother until research canprove otherwise his exact relation to the family.

There is a DAR file giving Jesse as a son of Nathan, but there arediscrepencies in it.

Nathan Hills enlisted about 1778 and in 1780 promoted corporal, 3rdRegiment, Col. Samue Wyllys.
He died of smallpox while in service. Scottoway Whitcomb (1739-1812)served as quartermaster and lieutenant in Col. Ebenezer Learned'sregiment, Massachusetts militia. He was born in Rochester, Mass. anddied in Granville, New York. (Relative of Nathan Hills)

Notes:
The 29 Nov 1817 will of Reuben Hills of Hartford, New York lists hisheirs as wife Hulda (Risley), four sons Reuben, Justin, Ezekiel, andHorace and two daughter, Lorry (Laura) Smith and Sophia Bryant. HuldaHills and Ezekiel Hills were named executors; witnesses were Lyman Hall,Samuel Taylor and Reuben's brother, Aaron Hills.

There are deeds (Washington County Deeds MM:173) in 1835 by Hulda, Justinand his first wife, Mary; Exekiel and his wife, Harriet; and Horace andhis wife, selling the Washington County farm of Reuben Hills Sr. Justinobtained bounty lands in West Almond, Allegany Co., New York where he isburied. Reuben Sr. is buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery in Hartford, NewYork. Reuben Jr. is buried in Allegany County, New York near Justin'sfarm.

Reuben is also mentioned in the 1793 Connecticut Probate Record of hisfather, Daniel Hills.

Reuben Hills was a Revolutionary War Veteran. After the war, he andNathan, his older brother bought small portions of their father Daniel'sGlastonbury, Connecticut property. Reuben seems to have been Nathan'sshadow. Some family researchers suggest their was friction betweenNathan and older brother Levi Hills, executor of Daniel's estate. Levidid not serve in the Revolution and stayed in Connecticut until 1811,moving to Vermont. Nathan had about 20 acres in East Hartford. Reubenwas next door with about 10 acres. Levi married Ollie Hollister and wasmarried by the Rec. Thomas Paine...yes, THAT Thomas Paine. Ollie was adescendent of Robert Treat Paine who signed the American Declaration ofIndependence.

Other information available is: That land was sold to Reuben and NathanHills by brother Levi, executor for Daniel Hills, on 30 Apr 1789. Reubenand Nathan lived next door to each toher in 1790 census of East Hartford,Connecticut, moved to Hartford, New York about the same time in 1793,lived close together in the 1800 and 1810 census of Hartford, New York.Widows lived close to each other in 1820 census.

Wills of Nathan and Reuben are on file in Salem, Washington, New York. While nothing shows absolute proof that Reuben's wife was Huldah Risley, articles published in magazines suggest strongly that Huldah was thedaughter of Nathaniel Risley and Ruth Caldwell, and sister to JerushaRisley who married Nathan Hills, brother of Reuben.

Reuben may have been the steading influence on Nathan. One of the familyarguments is whether Nathan at age 14 had a son Jesse--the controversialJesse. In any event, the Washington County (NY) History of 1878 had abio of Nathan R. Hills, one of the many Nathan's and named for hisgrandfather Nathan, that says Nathan and Reuben came to Granville in1794. Nathan shortly "removed to Hartford (NY)" The brothers weresuccessful farmers.

The book Hale, House, and Related Families only gives the first 4children listed in the family group record. Another researcher adds thefollowing children, although they may not be the children of Aaron andAsenath Hills:
Sarah Hills b. 1810 died Mar 1830, Warren co., New York

Jesse Hills is the controversial one in the family. There are those whosay that Nathan Hills fathered Jesse when only 14 years old. This cannotbe proven or disproven at this time. Most researchers just placed him inDaniel's family and he is considered a son of Daniel and a brother ofNathan at this time.
