Notes:
Nathan's will, probated 28 Dec 1811, mentions wife Jerusha; daughters,Hannah, Cytha, Sara, Anna, Hulda, and sons Nathan, George, Samuel, andDavid. (No Jesse) From History of Washington Co., New YOrk 1737-1838 by Everts and Ensign,1878, Page 404: "Nathan Hills came from Hartford, Ct. about 1793 and lived in the town ofHartford, Washington Co. where he was a farmer. He had nine children, ofwhom George was born in 1789 in Hartford, Ct. and came with his father. He farmed with his father until he was aged about 25, when he removedfirst to Granville, then to Hebron. He married Polly, daughter of StephenReynolds of Granville by whom he had 10 children. He died in 1874." Some have insisted that Jesse Hills, born abt 1774, was a son of Nathan.Nathan, born about 1760, would have been only 14 years of age at the timeof Jesse's birth. While this is not impossible, it would be unusual forthe times. Nothing has been found to verify this statement and surelysomething would have been written about such a birth. Our ancestors werecontrolled by the church and nothing got past the church fathers, especially an illigitimate child. If there had been a marriage, this toowould have been noted. Although some agree that Jesse was a relative, more probably a brother, he is listed as a brother until research canprove otherwise his exact relation to the family. There is a DAR file giving Jesse as a son of Nathan, but there arediscrepencies in it. Nathan Hills enlisted about 1778 and in 1780 promoted corporal, 3rdRegiment, Col. Samue Wyllys. He died of smallpox while in service. Scottoway Whitcomb (1739-1812)served as quartermaster and lieutenant in Col. Ebenezer Learned'sregiment, Massachusetts militia. He was born in Rochester, Mass. anddied in Granville, New York. (Relative of Nathan Hills)
