Historical information included in notes. James became a woodturner in Newton. He had inherited from his grandmother the shop and equipment that had belonged to his grandfather. Soon after his marriage in 1739 he sold the shop and moved to Worcester and took up farming. He bought 60 acres in the southwestern part of town and, as the years went on, added other acreage. He was a well-known and respected resident of Worcester, and was tax collector in 1784.He was married three times. Twice he was left widowed. He married Jerusha Park in 1739, and she died 16 years later. They had five children. In 1757, James married Mary Killey in Worcester. Then, 22 years later, he married a widow, Lydia (Mower) Ward.
He married Sarah Ward 14 Dec 1708 at Newton, Middlesex, Ma . Sarah Ward was born at Newton, Middlesex, Ma 25 Mar 1685 daughter of John Ward and Mary Spring .
