David LEWIS
David Lewis, Sr., son of John Lewis and Martha Evans, left Wales 18Apr 1856 and reached Boston MA 23 May 1856. On the 26th of May hestarted for Iowa City. Here he rested and came across the plains withthe 3rd company of hand carts. They were organized in numbers of about300. He broke camp on 23 Jun 1856 and started across the plains,arriving at Salt Lake City on the 2nd of Oct 1856.
David Lewis was born 2 Sep 1860 at Bountiful UT. He was anexcellent public speaker and was an active member of the Deseret DebatingSociety. His wife, Eva Thurgood, was born in Bountiful 12 Aug 1864.They were the parents of seven children as follows: David William, ClaudeAlvin, Roland Rudger, Edmund Elroy, Eva Leone, Verla Ann, and ClydeRudell. The family came to the Big Horn Basin with the Mormon Colony in thespring of 1900. When the Fourth of July was celebrated at the head ofthe Sidon Canal, David Lewis delivered the oration. He contracted andbuilt a mile of railroad grade near the present Warren MT in 1901. TheLewis family erected and operated the first hotel in Cowley. David waselected to Cowley's first town council. Later he was Mayor, SchoolTrustee, President of the Sidon Irrigation District, and a member of theStake Board of Education. David was a successful efficient farmer. Heproduced red and black currants and raspberries, but his efforts toproduce peaches and cherries failed because of the climatic conditions.He always kept cows and sheep. Eva died 22 Jan 1924. A few years later, David married Jane KennedyLewis.
