Notes:
Sanders family(wife was Eikerenkotter) that rebuilt the Okatee home of John C. Frederick Eikerenkoetter in Beaufort Dist.,SC, states the death of Francis Xavier Eikerenkoetter is recorded in the family Bible, pub.1826; Xavier died in 1820 in Orangeburg Dist.,SC as recorded in Bible; Descendants of the Afro-American Eikerenkoetter family's have the oral tradition of the White ancestor Eikerenkoetter was a German Duke; The first Afro-American ancestor, Joseph Eikerenkoetter, was the son of Fran. Xavier Eikerenkoetter, Joseph was born ca 1818 probably in Beaufort Dist.SC, therefore, his father MUST have been Francis Xavier, as his brother, John Christian Frederick Eikerenkoetter, did not arrive in So.Carolina from New York until about 1822-1823; John may have gone to SC to settle his brother's estate as there does not seem to be any other reason why he would leave New York; In his estate there must have been his"wife" and son, that were either Afro-American or Indian descent, probably not Free, legally, and were "assumed as property", by brother John. John's wife died enroute or soon after arrival in Charleston, as the children are placed in the Charleston Orphanage in 1825, 1830 & 1831, where the youngest son (Frederick Eikerenkotter) died 11 MAR 1831; John then married Jane Behn of Beaufort Co.,SC 30 JUN 1831; It is the Slave list 1860 that matches some males & females by age but not named in the 1870 & 1880 census' in Beaufort Co.,SC. The Beaufort District Court House was burned during the Civil War and land, deeds, probates & other court records that might prove these assumptions are not available until after 1865; F#1055366 Baptism. 22 MAy 1791, p.151; Patrini,"pro A.R.D. Notes:
Family tradition of the Afro-American branch of the Eikerenkoetter family in Beaufort Co.,SC states "The first known male ancestor was from Germany and he was"a German Duke"; "There were three Eikerenkoetter brothers; one married an Indian woman, one married a Black woman the other was married to a White woman" I have established one married a White woman in New York about 1817-18, he was John Christian Frederick, b.1800; Francis Xavier, d.1820 in Orangeburg District, SC must have"married" either an Indian or Afro- American Slave and had one son: Joseph, b.ca 1818 in Beaufort Dist.,SC; About 1836 a nephew of these two brothers arrived in SC and married a Besselieu but there are no records except for a marriage settlement, as no marriage records were required in SC until 1915, and the Beaufort District Court House was burned during the Civil War and all records lost. Orangeburg Dist. Court House was burned also, no records survive. 1860 Slave list: w/Fredk Eikerenkoetter Beaufort Co.,SC p.36-37, has as the first listed slave a female age 65yrs. COULD this be the mother of Joseph. I must check to see if any names are listed in 1850. Joseph, the son of this mother, and his wife Margaret, named a daughter Mary, who was b.ca 1844 and possibly their first daughter; IF they named her for Joseph's mother her name MAY have been Mary ????
