Arrived in U.S. by June 30, 1826 from Ireland. Schooner: Retriene, Master Jacob Hawe. Was approximately 28 at this time. Oldest son of the family His ancestors emigrated from England to America under William Penn, founder of PA, and settled in Bucks County, PA. His grandfather was William Ashton. His father was Samuel Ashton. In a letter of Sept 8, 1875, Wm J Ashton writes of his family: "My ancesstors emigrated from England to America under William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, and settled in BUcks county of that state. My grandfather's name was William Ashton. Of the date of this birth, I have no kowledge. My father's name was Samuel Ashton. He was born in Feb. 1771, and had one sister older than himself. She was burned to death when a young woman. They were born and raised in Bucks County. My Gransmother's maiden name was Hutchison. She had one brother and one sister. Her brothers name was Thomas Hutchinson, after whom my brother Thomas was named. Her sister's name was Rebecca Hutchinson. She married a man by the name of Edward Chatman, a physician who raise my father, as his father died when he was only 3 years old."
