James ASHTON
Was a farmer and blacksmith. James and Cassandra lived in Perry Twp. Brown Co, where he was a farmer and where their children were born. In 1851 they moved to Highland Twp, Definace Co, where James was a farmer and blacksmith.
Cassandra had 2 boy cousins named Prickett, who when 4 and 8 years old were stolen by a wandering band of Indians. The backsoodsmen assembled immediately, but failed to overtake them, and finally lost the trail. Many years later a strange character came into the neighborhood and said he was the elder of the two boys. He said the younger of the two boys was killed by the Indians and his body hidden. This the Indians did, because he could not travel fast enough to keep up with them. There was a Judge Prickett in Albion, IN, who was a sone of the same Prickette family. These people also vere Virginians. Elder Gavitt told Dr. D.R. Look the story of the elder Prickett boy, as his father knew the circumstances which was that the elder Gavitt had been the means of christening an Indian Chief. However, the Indian Chief persistently refused to ansewer any questions relative to the man. FInally on his death bed he sent for his white friend Gavitt, who told him he must tell the white man (his son-in-law) where his people were and that he must go and see them. Finnaly the Chief yeilded to Gavitt's request.

He married Cassandra Slye 19 Sep 1822 at Brown, Ohio . Cassandra Slye was born at Clermont Co, Ohio 16 Oct 1805 .
