Frederic Eli Joseph MARSHALL
Iremember my grandfather only as an old man. He was unsteady on his feet and would lean forward and try to keep his feet and legs going fast enough to stay under his body. As he would walk down the hill to the farm buildings from the house, he would occasionally not be able to keep the feet going and would fall on his face. He would get up and keep on going. He was a farmer and a carpenter, a skill he passed on to his decendents. He would sit in the evening by the radio and was faithful to the Grand Ole Opre on Saturday nites. I used to spend many evenings at the house of my grandparents. It was built by my grandfather and was the house in which I was born. There was always a special feeling of comfort while there. Upstairs lived Uncle Ralph, Aunt Thelma, and cousin LeJean. He is listed on the church records as Joseph Eli Frederick Marshall.
Many memories come to mind today as I hear that he has developed shingles. This is a signal of a failing immune system as of this 10th day of October, 1992. On 21 Mar 1994 he was in a nursing facility being visited by his daughter Orcelia, when he seemed to have avery lucid conversation. He stated that that was to be his last day here. She thought he meant his last day in the nursing facility. He lapsed into a coma after this conversation and died two days later.
He was a city policeman in the city of Detroit for thirty years. He was single during his later years and died in his home. He had built the home with wood cut off the farm property. Subsequently a grand nephew has purchased the farm and lives in the home which is next to his grandfather's home and farm[Lee Marshall]. He was a graduate of Hillsdale High School and had attended the University of Michigan and Hillsdale College. Funeral services were in Litchfield, Michigan.
Married 2 times and no children. Married first Henry Hilborn and was divorced in 1933 having been married in 1922. She died in a nursing home in Litchfield.
I remember; 1 Getting up at 4 a.m. and being picked up at my home in Jonesvuille by Uncle Bill to go to Allen or outside of Allen at White Marble Springs to help mix cement for the foundation of the house he was building. This would be on Sunday morning. He was sheriff of the county and this was one of those times when he could take time off to do the work. We would work till noon and then he would return to Hillsdale and drop me off on his way. They lived in the jail building itself. I stayed over-nite there a few times as I was growing up. Later he was elected to the state legislature representing Branch and Hillsdale counties. He remained in the legislature until his death of cancer of the lung.
1992 Living with his son on their farm in Allen, Michigan. His last years were complicated by severe arthritis and disceminated cancer thru the abdomen. He received chemotherapy, colostomy, etc.. A farmer all his life, he was a good man. His farm was my second home as I grew up. I am deeply saddened on this 10th of Oct. l992. He died at 5:30 p.m. at the hospital in Coldwater, Michigan having been admitted on 4 Oct, 1992.
He married Annie May Martin 4 Oct 1894 at Allen, Hillsdale, Mi . Annie May Martin was born at Allen, Hillsdale, Mi 29 Nov 1874 daughter of George Martin and Annie T. Mathews .
