There is some discussion about coming from Poland. I quote Elsilee
Marshall--According to a family tradition, John Mathews was the son of a Polish
nobleman who feared for the life of his son during a time of war and unrest in
Poland during the late 18th century. In an effort to save his son's life, he
paid a ship's captain a sum in gold equal to his son's weight to have young
John smuggled out of the country. The boy became a stow-a- way on a ship bound
for America. Once here he apparently was a sailor for some time until he
eventually met and married Sarah[Sally] Martin. They had eight children, of
whom five lived to adulthood. John Mathews was killed in a cave-in of a gravel
pit or sand pit around 1840. The exact date and place are not known, execpt
that it was in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York.
Parents were Mathew Martin and Margaret. Per E. Marshall---Sally Martin was the
daughter of Matthew Martin and his wife Margaret [Strong?] of Conn. and
Mercersburg, Penn..Sally and her sister, Elizabeth, moved with their parents
from Mercersburg to the shores of Lake Ontario in the summer of 1806. Her
sister Elizabeth married Andrew Cornwall and their descendants still live on
the property at Putneyville, New York. Sally married the young John Mathews
and lived for a time in Putneyville, although the 1820 census shows Mathew
Martin living in Gorham, Ontario, New York, with a young couple and some young
children which leads one to believe that John and Sally Mathews and their
babies were living in Putneyville with her parents sill living with them. After
her parents died in 1833 and 1835, they moved back to the Canandaigua area
where John was killed.

She was married to Moses Cleveland.
He was a Civil War veteran. I have certificates of duty and rank. He was
married in Palmyra, New York, on either 27 or 29 Aug 1847..
Married Sylvia Smith in 1851. Died of drinking paris green poison. Buried
Clifton Springs. Died Hopewell., New York.
He has two marriages listed, 1-Jane Turner, 2-Adalaid Wilson.

He married Sarah Martin 1818 at Mercersburg, Franklin, Pa . Sarah Martin was born at Mercersburg, Franklin, Pa 19 Feb 1796 daughter of Mathew Martin and Margaret .
