The newspaper said he hung himself. He was hard of hearing and very obstinant. He was married to Mary Keller and then to Elizabeth Donohoe. There are references to Germany on the cencus reports but on his recording in his family record he writes clearly as if he were educated in this country. He records also the death date of Joseph Henry Handgen on July 20, 1851, perhaps his father. The census of 1870 for Scipio Twp. of Hillsdale Co. shows his place of birth to be first Penn. then Germany with his parents being of foreign birth. Perhaps he was born in Germany but grew up in the United States. RESEARCH NOTE: Joseph's father may be Joseph Henry HANDGEN who died 20 Jul 1851.

She married Charles W Kratzer born 20 July 1840. This is all recorded in a book on Putnam County, Ohio. From the records of Donald F. Bougher of West Salem, Ohio, She is buried in Old Sugar Ridge Cemetery, Leipsic, Ohio.
He is not with his father in Michigan as of the 1870 census, but appears on the 1860 census as being 8y/o. .
She married Dallas Kirk in 1874. He was born 6 Feb 1854 and died on 22 Mar 1932. She is listed as being with her father in Michigan in 1880 Census. Dallas Kirk lived back in Leipsic. According to his obituary she was still living in 1932 when Dallas died. Her children also lived in Leipsic and were both married. She was known in the family as `Kate'.
She appears on the 1860 census as being 5y/o. Her father had moved to Putnam Co. prior to this thus she was born there. She is not listed as being with her father in 1870.
NAME: Jennie (Jane) HENDGEN
Born on Wednesday, 7 a.m.. Record of birth and death are on his father's family record.
Death certificate states he John Edward born 26 Feb 1960. His mother was Mary Kellar who died 30 Aug of the same year. John died of anuria and intestinal obstruction after nephrolithotomy in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It doesn't say if it is University Hospital or St. Joseph's. The census of 1870 lists John as being 12 y/o. This would mean he was born before 1860 as it states on his death certificate. Whoever gave the information [ his wife ] also stated he was born in Jonesville and didn't know of his father or mother.
He married Mary Ann Keller 23 May 1848 at Crawford, Ohio . Mary Ann Keller was born at of Leipsic, Putnam, Ohio Abt 1820 .
