Capt. Roger Pitkin, oldest child of William and Hannah Pitkin, was a
farmer.  He built and settled near his father on the first Main street,
ona portion of his father's large tract of land.  He was early
recognized as one of the leading citizens.  He was one of the selectmen
of the town for several years, and its first school committee-man, 1720.
He was commissioner on the "Great Meadows".  He was appointed by the
General Assembly, captain of thefirst militia company on the east side
of the river, the then (1698) Third Company State Militia.  He was
actively engaged with his command in defense ofthe town against the
Indians in 1704, and in other troubled times.  He 'owned his covenant"
with the "First Church of Hartford" Nov. 22, 1685, and his oldest child,
Hannah, was baptized that day.  Roger and his wife and his brother
William and wife were received into "full communion" Aug 14, 1692, in the
"First church of Christ in Hartford".

Stanley, came over with the Rev. Thomas Hooker.  Capt. Stanley maried a
second wife, Hannah Spencer, May 13, 1686, daughter of Samuel Spencer.

It is related in connection with this marriage that Mr. Pitkin, in
passing the Cowles residence, was informed that Mrs. Cowles had been
presented with a fine
girl.  His reply was, "I will wait forthat girl", and he did wait for
and marry her; the difference in ages being twenty-seven years.
