                   NOTE:
Louis du Bois fled France to escape persecution, prior to 1655. He came to America with his family in 1661 aboard the "St. Jeane Baptiste" and settled for a short time in Wiltwyck (Kingston) New York before moving to the new, nearby town of Hurley. Both were then part of the Dutch Colony of New Netherlands. In 1663, he fought Indians who had taken captive his wife, three children and other Huguenot settlers. He was leader of the 12 men (Duzine) who obtained a patent for land in 1677 that became New Paltz, New York. He returned to Kingston or nearby Harvey in 1686, leaving his sons to build up the colony. He was apparently a money lender. At some point after the British took over, he was removed from a position as local judge because of differences with the governor's assistant.

                   NOTE:
Catarinen was captured by Esopus Indians on 7 June 1663, along with three of her children, her sister Maria, Maria's child and other women and children of New Village (now Hurley, NY). They were rescued three months later, just in time to save their lives. The prisoners had succeeded in delaying their executions by pleasing the savages with songs. One tntitled "The Babylonish Captives" was appropriately the song which Caterinen Blanchan DuBois and her children were singing at the moment of their deliverer's arrival.
On June 7, 1663, an Indian war party raided the settlement, taking Catherine, three of their children, and others as prisoners. Louis, with Captain Martin Kreiger and a party of thirty men, set out in pursuit of the Indians and their captives. They surprised and killed one of the Indian's rear guard, and took another captive. From him they learned the whereabouts of the main party, and on the second day found them. The Indians had bound the captives to trees, in preparation for torture and death, but Catherine led the group in singing the 137th Psalm, which laments the affliction of the Israelites as they sat by Babylon's stream. So sweet was the sound of this song that the savages hesitated.
In the Second Esopus War, 1663, among the captives taken by the Minnisink Indians into the Catskill Mountains, when they burned the village of Hurley on June 7, were Catherineand her baby Sara (who later became the wife of Joost Janse Van Meteren) were placed upon a pile of logs. The Huguenot mother began to sing a hymn learned in France. The charmed Indians withheld the torch and listened, demanding another and another song. Before the last hymn was finished, her husband, Louis DuBois, with the Dutch soldiers and Capt. Krieger, arrived and this time were successful in saving all of the captives and punishing the Indians.

                   NOTE:
Abraham Dubois migrated to what became Ulster County, New York with his parents in 1661. At the time, the settlement of Wiltwyck (now Kingston) was part of the Dutch Colony, New Netherlands. The growing number of Huguenot refugees led them to establish a new village nearby, which became Hurley. Abraham, his mother and two siblings were among 45 women and children captured by Indians in 1661. After three months, they were rescued by his father and New Amsterdam soldiers. In 1664, the British took over from the Dutch. In 1677, Abraham, his father, his brother Isaac and nine other heads of Huguenot families requested a land patent from the British governor for land purchased from the Indians on May 26. The grant for more than 39,000 acres was signed on September 29. The large tract of land became the town of New Paltz, a town that was run by the "Duzine" (the 12 heads of the families) for more than a century, although it evolved into an elective, representative position. Abraham served in Second Canadian Expedition during the Colonial Wars in Col. Thomas Farmer's Regt., 6th Co., George Van Est, Captain.
