NOTE FROM FAMILY RECORDS: ** NB: One of the difficulties for family history research for this John Beanland (b. 1835) is that there were two individuals with the name "John Beanland" born less than a year apart in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. Both of them lived to adulthood and both married a wife whose first name was Mary. The other John Beanland is shown in familysearch.org as having been born on 24 Sep 1834. His wife is shown as being Mary Emma. The author of this note was able to distinguish the two John and Mary Beanland households by information from the 1881 British Census. The other John Beanland (b. 1834), and his wife, Mary Emma, are shown in the census (see familysearch.org) as living at 10 Bakes St. at "Horton in Bradford," while the John and Mary Beanland, which are the principal subjects of these notes, are shown as living at a home called Norr Green. By use of the 1881 Census records, this author was able to establish that the children, Titus (b. 1863), Alice (b. 1867), George (b. abt. 1869) and Margaret (b. 1872), lived at Norr Green at the time of the census, and have been included as children of the John Beanland born 1 Mar 1835. The other children included in this family group record as children of John Beanland (b. 1 Mar 1835), were included on the basis of family recolections of Margaret (b. 1872) who is the grandmother of the author of this note. We believe that John Beanland's father is Titus Beanland because his marriage certificate lists his father as Titus Beanland. RESEARCH NOTE: There are indeed two John Beanland families in Bradford at the same time, however the two are very different in age and we are able to distinguish between the two using census records. Both John Beanlands were in fact living in the same household in 1841, the home of Titus Beanland. John Beanland who married Mary Emma Mitchell is listed as being 21 years of age, and would not be the son of Titus, but probably of some other relation. John Beanland, son of Titus, is listed as being only 7 years old. We were able to locate John on the Bradford Parish records, and confirm that John Bradford, listed in family records with a birthdate of 1 Mar 1834, and the John Bradford christened on 24 Sep 1834, were the same individual. However, the fact that John Beanland and Mary Dinsdale are given the same birthdate is suspicious, especially considering the fact that more than once Mary is listed as one year older than John on the censuses. This would correspond better with the September christening date. Because of this evidence, and common practice, we have removed the birth date in question, and have accepted the christening date. It has also been determined that the John Beanland who married Mary Emma Mitchell is the son of John Beanland and Ann, born 27 Sep 1820. Thus the two John Beanlands have been identified and the confusion has been resolved. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008 FAMILY RECORDS: The 1881 British Census (see familysearch.org), shows that John was the head of the household at his home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census, he was reported as being 47 years old, married, a "coal miner", and having been born at Bradford, Yorkshire, England. Occupation: 1851 Coal Miner Occupation: 1861 Coal Miner Occupation: 8 Dec 1870 Stone Miner Occupation: 1871 Coal Miner Occupation: 1881 Coal Miner Occupation: 12 Aug 1882 Stone Quarryman Occupation: 1891 Stone Miner
RESEARCH NOTE: During her life, Mary lists her birthplace as Gale, Wesleydale, Skipton, and Hawes. Gayle is a small village a mile south of the town of Hawes in the valley of Wesleydale. The closest major city, Skipton, is to the south through the Yorkshire Dales. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008 FAMILY RECORDS: The 1881 British Census (see familysearch.org). shows that Mary was the wife of John Beanland, the head of the household at their home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census, she was reproted as being 48 years old, married, with no occupation designation, and having been born at Gale, Yorkshire, England.
Birthdate of 15 Mar 1860 as cited from a Birth Certificate cannot be correct, as Elizabeth on the 1861 Census was listed as being 4 years old. She is also listed in the 1871 Census as being 14. Without seeing the Birth Certificate, it is impossible to know if it was a clerical error, or if this the birth certificate does not pertain to this Elizabeth. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008
RESEARCH NOTE: Sarah is listed on the 1861 Census as being 2 years old, on the 1871 census as being 12, and 22 on the 1881 Census. Contrary to family records, she is, in fact, listed in 1881. It is unknown how the 1868 birthdate has become associated with Sarah, when all other records show a 1859 birthdate. The 1861, 1871, 1881 Censuses show a birthplace of Totenham/Tottingham. While this is thought to refer to Tottenham, in London, the 1871 Census lists it in the county of Durham, just north of Yorkshire, and the 1861 Census lists it in Yorkshire. This suggests that it is not in London, but rather in North Yorkshire or South Durham (they share a border). There is reference in some old records about a "Manor Tottenham" in the town of Auckland in County Durham; this is likely the location of Sarah's birth, although no additional information could be gathered about it. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008 FAMILY RECORDS: Sarah is not shown on the 1881 census, although she would have been 12 or 13 at the time of the census. (Disproved)
FAMILY RECORDS: The 1881Briticsh Census (see familysearch.org), shows that Titus lived with this parents at their home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census, he was reported as being 17 years of age, unmarried, a "worsted weaver' and having been born at Adwalton, Yorkshire, England. Source of death date is unknown.
FAMILY RECORDS: On Certificate of Birth the surname for Thomas adds an "s", as in Beanlands. On some old undocumented family group sheets, Thomas is shown as having died as a child. This possibility may be partially evidenced (though not conclusively established), by the fact that he is not shown in the 1881 British Census, when he would have been 16 or 17 years of age. Free BMD shows a Thomas Beanland who is born about 1865, died in Jul-Aug-Sep of 1875. This is most likely the same Thomas. Thomas is not listed on the 1871 Census, most likely inferring that he died earlier than 1871, and not 1875 as has been supposed. It is possible, however, that he was living with other family during this census, although unlikely. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008
FAMILY RECORDS: The 1881 British Census (see familysearch.org), shows that Alice lived with her parents at their home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census, she was reported as being 14 years old, unmarried, a "worsted spinner", and having been born at Adwalton, Yorkshire, England. - At the time of the death of her sister, Margaret Beanland Dibb in 1953, Margaret's obituary noted that Alice lived in Denholm, England. Denholm is actually in Scotland, although it is on the border of Scotland and England. It is unknown if the obituary really referenced another location in England that was misprinted as Denholm, or if it was assumed that Denhom was in England, and not in Scotland.
The 1881 British Census (see familysearch.org), shows that George lived with his parents at their home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census he was reported as being 12 years of age, unmarried, a "worsted spinner' and having been born at Heaton, Yorkshire, England.
RESEARCH NOTE: The 1871 Census also shows Margaret, aged 4 months, born in Wilsden. This would make it impossible for the birthdate given in family records of Dec 1872 to be correct, unless this Margaret died and another was born the following December. However, the 1871 Census was conducted nationwide on April 2nd. The 1881 Census was conducted on April 3rd, 1881. If Margaret was born in Dec 1772, she would have been listed as 8 years old on the 1881 Census, but she is not. The birthdate has been changed to reflect the records. Also, the christening record of 1892 has been interpreted to mean the LDS baptism, and not the Church of England Christening. The christening date has been removed, however, it is somewhat likely that the 18 Dec 1872 date is in fact a christening date. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008 FAMILY RECORDS: The 1881 British Census (see familysearch.org), shows that Margaret lived with her parents at their home, Norr Green, in Wilsden, Yorkshire, England. At the time of the census, she was reported as being 10 years old, unmarried, a scholar (i.e. student) and having been born at Wilsden, Yorkshire, England.
RESEARCH NOTE: No evidence of John is on any censuses, meaning he likely was born and died between 1871 and 1881. It is assumed that the birthdate is from family records. - Shoebox Genealogy, 2008
