Martha Ellen was called "L". Grandpa Evey Dotson always said it was short for Hell, not Ellen because she was the meanest woman ever born. In fact she was believed to be a witch. The curses she put on people often "came true." Seems she got mad at a neighbor once and told him that he and his family would go straight to hell. The next morning they found their house had sunk into the ground several feet. This was because L was sending them to hell. (In actuallity, Arkansas is a region with numerous geological sink holes. They had built over one of these....or else Ellen's powers were strong.) Grandpa said he never remembers her having a single "nice" day. in the 1870 census she was listed as attending school
