Historical information included in notes. MARTIN HARMON & TRYPHENA POOLEMartin was the 5th child in a family of 11, the son of Nehemiah Harmon and Abigail Norton. He was born in New Marlborough, Berkshire, Massachusetts, where his parents moved before 1752. By 1762, the family had moved to back to their old stomping grounds at Suffield, Hartford, Connecticut. In 1770, they were in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. About this time, Martin's father received a New Hampshire Land Grant and the older men in the family went to Vermont to prepare a home for the family. Martin and his brother, Alpheus probably stayed behind in Massachusetts to help his mother while their older brothers, Nehemiah and Selah probably went to help their father and uncles clear the land and build homes in the wilderness. Their homesteads had to be abandoned during the Revolution and the family returned to Suffield, Connecticut until after Martin's marriage.Martin's pension record says he enlisted Aug 1778 to serve in the Revolutionary War with Massachusetts troops. Previous to this time, he and his brothers had served in Vermont with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys. During the Revolutionary War, Martin served 9 months under Captain Burbank and Major Fernald. In May 1780, he reenlisted and served 12 months as private under Captain Samuel Granger with General Waterbury's Connecticut troops. In the fall of 1781, he was wounded while in camp and returned home where he remained until his term expired. For an insight into Martin's life, I go now to a history written by his son, Jesse Pearce Harmon:"My father was married on 22 Nov 1785 to Tryphena [Poole]. My father and grandfather [Nehemiah & Abigail Harmon] emigrated soon after my father was married to Rupert, Bennington, Vermont from Suffield, Connecticut, where my father remained until the year 1799. I remained with my father until I was about 6 years of age. I then went to the town of Lewis (which is in Essex County, New York near Elizabethtown) and lived with John Gibbs."
He married Tryphena Poole 22 Nov 1785 at Sheffield, Hartford, Connecticut . Tryphena Poole was born at Rupert, Bennington, Vermont 15 Jul 1758 daughter of Mr. Poole and Sarah .
