NASATO, Mary
Found peace on February 12, 2003.
Mary was born in Cebu, Philippine Islands on April 7, 1910. She is preceded in death by her husband Mansueto (Tony) Nasato; daughter Joshephine Weller; parents Laureana and Jason R Jackman; brothers Bill, Boyd and Frank; and sisters Felisa, Conception and Maria. She is survived by her sons William and Jason; daughters Carolyn (Richard) Larson and Stella (John) De Los Santos; sister Virginia de Remigio; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and numerous friends.
Mary met and married Tony, a World War II and Korean War Veteran, in 1931 while he was stationed in the Philippine Islands. During World War II Mary demonstrated many acts of courage which are hallmarks of her life as a wife and mother. When Tony was imprisoned in Bataan at Camp Cabanatuan, Mary risked capture to visit Tony. She was caught once by the Japanese soldiers as she attempted to smuggle much needed medical supplies to prisoners with malaria and dysentery. Mary, along with several other brave Filipino scouts, were held in the camp. While some were shot for their actions, Mary was released.
While Tony was imprisoned in Japan, Mary and her children William, Josephine, and Carolyn were transported by the military to the US. After landing in San Francisco, Mary began the uncertain train journey to New York City were she would begin to build a life for herself and family. She struggled to adapt to the new country and supported her children as hope dimmed that Tony would ever return.
Upon the end of the war he was repatriated from prison in Japan. Unaware of
his family's relocation to the United States, Tony returned to Manila to search for his family. Against all odds, the family was reunited in 1945 in New York City. They moved to Lompoc, CA in 1947 and shared a more serene life with their children.
Mary designed a home filled with handicrafts and expressions of beauty. She was active in the local community and was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Mary provided distinguished service to these organizations holding the office of president among other titles. Her dedication to home, family, friends and community will long be remembered.
A Rosary will be held 7pm, Thursday, February 20th, at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel in Lompoc. A Mass will be held 10 am, Friday, February 21st, at La Purisima Catholic Church in Lompoc. Services following at Lompoc Cemetery.
