JACOB GLENN This biography was written by Mrs. Wanda Conley of California , a George Glenn descendant: Jacob Glenn, born 1 August 1800 in North Carolina, married Mary Ryals, daughter of William Ryals, about 1825 in Tennessee. Mary was born 28 August 1807 in either Tennessee or North Carolina. Jacob and Mary were living in Hardin County, Tennessee in 1830, where their first four or five children were born. About 1836, Jacob and Mary, along, with her brother, William, "Billy", Ryals, and possibly others, left Hardin County, Tennessee and came to Arkansas. They first settled in Marion County, Ark. but soon moved to nearby Searcy County. Jacob and Mary settled about three miles northeast of Pindall, Ark. and built their home, the house is no longer standing, was thought to have faced the northwest. Joining the land of the Glenn's was the home site of a family named Hemphill. Later one of the sons, Marshall Henry Hemphill, married Mary Arnetta Glenn, daughter of Jacob and Mary. The original Hemphill barn was still standing (in 1978) and is located about a half mile from the original home site of Jacob and Mary. Located on the Glenn property is a large cave about 1/4 mile south of the home site. The neighbors of the Glenn family, including the Hemphill, Roses, Duggers & Meeks, kept their perishable food in this cave, along with the Glenn family, and all shared together what they had. The cave is very large and cool inside. It has two rooms and a long tunnel leading off one of the rooms. During the Civil War another use was found for the cave, as men from both sides found shelter there at one time or another. The little area where the Glenns lived grew and was named Glenco for this family. At one time there was a Post Office and the railroad. But now all that is left of this small community is the Glenco Cemetery, located in the valley west of the home site of Jacob and Mary Glenn. The Cemetery was started during the Civil War when three soldiers lost their lives there in a skirmish. When the armies moved on, leaving their dead, women of the Dugger family buried the three soldiers on this small hill. It is unknown if the soldiers were Rebels or Yankees. Mary (Ryals) Glenn died 11 April 1873 and Jacob Glenn died 31 July 1882, and both are buried in the Glenco Cemetery. Large above ground slate rock cover the entire graves of Jacob and Mary Glenn. *** ORIGINS OF JACOB GLENN According to bible and census records, Jacob Glenn was born August 4, 1800 in North Carolina. The 1800 census of North Carolina was officially dated August 1, 1800, so Jacob would have been included as a child under 10 in that census. In 1800, there were 10 Glenns with sons under 10 in North Carolina. They were: Glenn, Gideon, Jr. FRANKLIN CO. 476 10101-00101-0-7 Glenn, Jeremiah ORANGE CO. 567 20010-21110-0-0 Glenn, William ORANGE CO. 567 20101-10100-0-0 Glenn, Terry ORANGE CO. 567 21001-22010-0-0 Glenn, Warrick ORANGE CO. 568 23101-10001-0-0 Glenn, Charles PERSON CO. 187 21010-20010-0-1 Glenn, Will PERSON CO. 201 21201-02111-0-0 Glenn, Abram ROCKINGHAM CO. 466 10010-20010-0-0 Glenn, Thomas SURRY CO. 655 10010-00100-0-0

Sons Giles, Benjamin, Thompson, John, and William From the above information, the William Glenn from Orange County, NC, looks most promising. He was possibly the son of Warrick Glenn. OTHER GLENNS There has been some speculation that Jacob Glenn was a brother of Lewis and Samuel Glenn who were also on the 1850 census of Marion County, Arkansas. According to research done by others, these Glenns came from Wilson County, Tennessee in 1848 to Arkansas. Prior to this date, they were in South Carolina. To date, I have found no connection between our Jacob Glenn and these Glenns, but equally cannot discount this possibility either. SUMMARY The only information we have in conclusion on the origins of Jacob Glenn are that he was born in North Carolina in 1800, possibly the son of William Glenn of Orange County, NC. Jacob's first son was William Duke Glenn, indicating a connection to the Duke family. His wife was Mary Eveline Ryals Glenn, brother of William Ryals, who was also on the 1840 census of Marion County, Arkansas. Mary and William Ryals were also born in North Carolina.
He was married to Mary Evaline Ryals (daughter of William Ryals and Unknown) in 1825. Mary Evaline Ryals was born on 28 Aug 1807 in North Carolina. She died on 11 Apr 1873 in Pindall, Searcy County, Arkansas. She was buried in Glenco Cemetery, Searcy County, Arkansas. Mary Evaline Ryals Glenn was the sister of William Ryals, 1801-1891. A possible sister was Delilah Adeline Ryals, b. 1820, Tennessee, who married Abijah Birden Keith. Jacob Glenn and Mary Evaline Ryals had the following children: +2 i. William Duke Glenn. +3 ii. George Arnold Glenn. +4 iii. Andrew Jackson Glenn. +5 iv. Nancy N. Glenn. +6 v. Elizabeth Caroline Glenn. +7 vi. Jacob Franklin Glenn. +8 vii. Sarah Adeline Glenn.
+9 viii. Mary Arnetta Glenn.10 ix. Martha F. Glenn was born in 1844 in Marion County, Arkansas. +11 x. Suzanne Lavada Glenn.

"During the year 1880, William M. Glenn and his wife, Martha L. moved west from their home in Arkansas, travelling across the plains with ox and mule team and for about two years, made their home in Summerville, Ore. In the fall of 1882 the father came to this valley to see what opportunities there were for homesteading and finding available land in the Fruitvale neighborhood, returned to this valley in the spring of 1883 and filed a homestead on the land that ever since, or for a period of 67 years, has been continuously [occupied] by the Glenn family."
