John LANPHIER
John Lanphier born Dec.1778 (book 343,pg.58 #229575) in New Ross County Wexford. He moved to Rosbercon in 1794 with his parents: John Lanphier Sr. & Mary Davis. John was the eldest son and died at the age of 102 in 1881 at Cove Head,P.E.I. He had emigrated to P.E.I. circa 1830. Around 1812, at age 34, he took the stones of the Rosbercon Dominican Abbey and used them to build a house & store on the riverside (River Barrow), a quarter mile northeast of Rosbercon. He was later caught smuggling (common in those days) and had to forheit all his property to pay the fine imposed on him. John was referred to (in the Ossary Catholic Archaeological Society Transactions, vol.1:1874-1879) as "the Vandal Lanphier" by the Catholic Very Reverend Canon Moore of Rosbercon. John was a convert to the Roman Catholic Church. Since the original Lanphier family was strongly anti-Catholic, John's conversion, along with his previous problems with the government authorities concerning his smuggling activities, may explain why he emigrated to P.E.I. in 1830. Note: Thomas Lanphier,Esquire, Dublin,(Book 185,p.189,#122689) 1775, described as the "Protestant Discoverer" confiscated property and lands from Catholics in the Legal Courts. The penal laws at that time legislated against the Roman Catholics, barring them from owning or renting land, thereby enabling Protestants to take over their property. OCCUPATION: Farmer
