of Pike county, Illinois, chap 177, (2) U. S. census 1830, Lincoln co unty,
Missouri, (3) U. S. census 1850, Pike county, Illinois page 436, (4 ) personal
records of William Edward Turnbaugh of Galatia, Illinois, (5) tombsto ne of wife
obtained from Lora White by correspondence.  This family was submitte d to the
temple for ordinances by Berta Ethel Young Olsen, a cousin of Jacob.
       In the summer of 1836, the first house was built in what is no w the
village of Pleasant Hill, then known as Fairfield.  This house, a lo g cabin,
was built by Jacob Turnbaugh as a home to which to take his bride, fo rmerly
Abigail Collard, whom he had married in July.  Jacob was the second s on of
George Turnbaugh, who brought his family to Pleasant Hill township i n 1827.
Jacob and his older brother, John, were born in Kentucky, Jacob in 18 18, the
year Illinois became a state.  When Jacob was nine years old, the fam ily moved
from Lincoln county, Missouri, to Pleasant Hill township.  They cross ed the
Mississippi River at Clarksville, then a town of only fifteen or twen ty houses,
and drove their ox teams across the bottoms to where the town of Plea sant Hill
now stands.  On March 6, 1827, George Turnbaugh, with the help of Abs olem
McLean and Joe Gipson, two of his Missouri neighbors, began the erect ion of a
log cabin to serve as a home for his family.  When the Turnbaughs fir st arrived
in Pleasant Hill township the site of the future village of Pleasan t Hill was
a dense thicket known as "Bear Thicket" because of the great number o f bears
that roamed through it.  Jacob's son, W. E. Turnbaugh lived at Galati a,
Illinois; he has a son, Frank  Turnbaugh of Pleasant Hill.  Jacob's f irst
cousin, Rachel D. Turnbaugh, married John Newton Collard, MRIN 74.
