"LUDWICK LENHART, a descendant of one of the pioneer families of SomersetCo., PA, and a prosperous merchant of Donegal borough, is a son of JACOB& ROSANNA (YOUNG) LENHART and was born near Lovansville, Somerset Co. PA,11 Nov 1882.  He is of German extraction.  His paternal grandfather,(HENRY LENHART) was born in Berks Co., and in 1785 emigrated to SomersetCounty where he purchased a farm. He was a Methodist in religeous belief,an honest man in his dealings and married an English woman namd SHOPBELLE(sic) who bore him eleven children...LUDWICK YOUNG, maternal grandfather,a native of Berks County, this State, removed to Somerset county where hefarmed until his death.  He married BARBARA BARROM (sic) by whom he hadfour sons and seven daughters.  One of these daughters was ROSANNA YOUNGwho married JACOB LENHART (father) who was born in Somerset county in1804 and died there in 1886.  He owned a good farm, was an elder in theEvangelical Lutheran Church and was an old-line Whig till thrKnow-nothing party started, when he joined the Democrats.  He served as amember of his township school board. He had three children:  Ludwick,Sara and Abraham.

LUDWICK LENHART was reared on a farm, educated in the schools of thatday. He learned the trade of carpenter which he followed for seven yearsHe then engaged in coopering & farming for some time.  He taught twoterms of school, after which he went to southern Illinois where  taughtone term.  After a few months stay in the west he returned home andpurchased a farm which he cultivated until 1869 when he enbarked in themercantile business in Bakerville.  In 1874 he moved from that place toDonegal, where he opened his present establishment,  He keeps a full andwell assorted stock of goods, is always attentive to the wants ofnumerous customers and has a substantial and constantly increasingtrade.  He owns his store -room besides other property in town.

LUDWICK LENHART united in marriage with ELIZABETH HOWARD,daughter ofAbaraham Howard of Somerset county.  They have five children: ELLEN,married to W. N. Baker, of Dixon, Illinois; WILLIAM, a locomotiveEngineer on the Southern Pacific RR;  FREEMAN, who is a railroadcontractor in the west;  MAHLON, who is one of the Repunblican candidatesfor nomination, and LIZZIE.
In political opinion Mr. Lenhart is a Republican and has served as judgeand inspector of elections and school director of his borough.  He andhis wife are members of the Evanglical Lutheran Church."
