Sgt. Major Robert Slayman, 56, of Salley, S.C., died Monday at University
Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Born in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the
late Guy and Nannie Kendle Slayman. He was employed by Chem-Nuclear
Service Inc. of Barnwell, S.C., and was a 23-year veteran of the U.S.
Army. He had served at Marshall Island, in the Korean War and the Vietnam
War. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oakleaf cluster. He had served
as Sergeant Major of the ROTC at Worfford College. He was a member of the
Salley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Eva Stair
Slayman; three daughters, Katherine Lee Scheffing of Sevallia, Ky.,
Deborah Bjork of Cedar Creek, S.C., and Barbara J. Slayman of Salley; one
son, Robert C. Slayman of West Columbis, S.C.; three sisters, Etta
Bartles, Elizabeth Clowdis and Nancy Moats, all of Hagerstown; five
brothers, Edward Slayman of Hudson, Fla., George Slayman of Smithsburg,
Md., William Slayman and Elvin Slayman, both of Hagerstown and John
Slayman of Williamsport, Md.; and three grandchildren. Full military
services will be held at the Salley United Methodist Church at 6 p.m.
Wednesday. The Rev. Ellen Marsh and the Rev. Sarah White will offciate.
Burial will be in Salley Oakview Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled
by Blizzard Funeral Home, Box 235, Main and Mills Streets, Wagner, S.C.
