J. William Johnson, formerly of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, September
23 in Manhassett, N.Y. A member of one of Morgan County's oldest
families, he was born in Berkeley Springs January 28, 1909, a son of
Ernest L. and Jeanette Slayman Johnson. Several generations of the
Johnson family occupied the ancestral home on North Washington Street
built by Johnson's grandfather, John William Johnson, and occupied last
by his mother, Mrs. Ernest Johnson. It was purchased from the Johnson
family by the Town of Bath and has become the town's municipal building.
He was graduated from Berkeley Springs High School and owned and operated
Berkeley Springs only theatre. He was assistant cashier at Citizens
National Bank and a member of the Berkeley Springs Young Men's Business
Club which produced the Tomato Festival. He was a member of St. Mark's
Episcopal Church and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His
wife, the former Kathryn Taylor, Of Minneapolis, Minn., preceded him in
death. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John C. Hawkins, of
Manhassett, and three granddaughters. A daughter, Mrs. Barbara Taylor
Kipe, preceded him in death, as did his only brother, Atty. Lewis E.
Johnson, of Fairmont. Funeral services were conducted Monday, September
26, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley Springs by Rev. Jack O.
Bird, with burial in Greenway Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the
Hunter Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be
made to the St. Mark's Episcopal Church Altar Guild in Berkeley Springs.
