Johann Simon HOH
Information supplied by Mrs. Gerald C. Hay, Sr. of Brooklyn, Wi., based on data supplied by Dr. Richard Hoh, Im Langacher 7, CH-8606 Greifensee, Switzerland. First definite records of Hoh (Hay) family of Gerhardsbrunn, Palatinate, (Germany). Records kept at Zweibrucken. The Kingdom of Bavaria from 1815 took up a rather large area. Upper and lower Palatinate (where Gerhardsbrunn is located) and Alsace comprised the Kingdom of Bavaria. The whole constituted an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire. Today Bavaria is a separate state in the southwest part of West Germany. The various independent cities and kingdoms did not unite and become the country of Germany until 1871. None of Johann Simon's children emigrated. There were 12 children, however, only 11 children are known.
Data supplied by Mrs. Gerald C. Hay, Sr. Zeselberg is 6 kilometers east of Gerhardsbrunn
She died as a child.
Records are kept in Zweibrucken. Records only contain birth information for sons Daniel & Valentin and birth and marriage information for Simon. Genealogists, therefore, suggest they emigrated. Records are found in Woodberry Twp, Bedford Co, Pennsylvania Deeds Book H page 397 for Simon and Eve Hay. Since we also find records for Daniel and Valentine in Wood- berry Twp we believe this Valentine is the husband of Catharine and his will is found in Will Book 1 pages 368, 369 & 370. He had 5 children, Mary, Catherine, Valentine, Margaret & Simon Gilbert. The dates from birth and U.S. census records are all compatible and no other Hay line can be found wherein they might be reconciled. Hans Valentin Hoh also had 5 daughters, however, their names are not listed in this record. Hans is a nickname for Johann in German.Records are kept in Zweibrucken. He had 4 sons and 3 daughters, all sons emigrated to America. David Hay's book Pioneer Simon Hay gives 2 dates for the birth, 3 Feb and 2 Mar, 1711. This is the ancestor of both David Hay of Somerset, Pennsylvania and Dr. James W. Courtney of Murray, Kentucky.
It is presumed by Dr. Richard Hoh of Greifensee that one or two children were born between 1739 and 1745 when Johann Valentin was born, however, he did not find any dates. In a diary of an Adam Muller, who lived in the. 19th century at Gerhardsbrunn it is stated "persons told that possibly the first persons who emigrated were Valentin and Abraham Hoh". Therefore, it is possible that Valentin had an older brother named Abraham, howvever, as stated Dr. Hoh has never found any dates.
