Note:
JACOB IMEL - Probably born ca 1785 or before. Died in 1816 or 1817. (Was listed in the 1816 tax records of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. but his wife, Martha was listed in the 1817 tax records of same township, which means that Jacob died after the 1816 taxes were recorded. I have no idea of his age, but since his wife was born 1788, Jacob must have been older than she. Married MARTHA - b. 1788. D. Jan. 14, 1875, Fayette Co., Penna., age 87 years. Martha is buried in the Mill Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette Co., Pa. Jacob is probably buried there, too, but has no stone. After Jacob died, Martha married LEONARD HARBAUGH. I believe that Jacob had two children:

2. Henry Imel. Born ca 1811 or earlier.
2. Susannah Imel. Born ca 1816.

I found an item of a Jacob Imel who died in Westmoreland Co., Pa. and left two children, Henry and Susannah in 1835. Since the estate of Jacob Imel of Fayette Co., Pa. was finally settled in 1835, and he had a daughter Susannah, I believe there was a mix-up in the date of Jacob's death, since there was no Jacob Imel who died 1835 in Westmoreland Co., leaving a son Henry and daughter Susannah.

The first record we have of Susannah Imel was in 1826, when Jacob Knable was appointed her guardian. She had had two guardians before this date: the first one had died and another man named Peter had been appointed. However, September 1, 1826, he declined the guardianship and we find Leonard Harbaugh, Susannah's stepfather, making application for the appointment of a third guardian for his stepdaughter, Susannah Imel, daughter of Jacob Imel. Jacob Knable was appointed and served from September, 1826 to December 28, 1836. Susannah married James Knight about 1836.

The family of Leonard Harbaugh is listed in the 1830 census of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. with two children: a son and a daughter, both under five years of age. Therefore, Martha Imel had two or more children after she married Leonard Harbaugh. The 1880 census of Springfield Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. lists a Leonard Harbaugh, age 55, born in Pa. who could be the son listed in the 1830 census under five years of age. He had a wife Elizabeth and son Ulysses, age 15.

If the son HENRY IMEL, born ca 1811 or earlier, was over the age of 14 when Jacob Knable was appointed guardian of Susannah in 1826, then he would not have needed a guardian. The first guardian, Nicholas Knight, appointed when Jacob Imel died, could have been guardian for both children.

SOMERSET COUNTY (PA.) COURTHOUSE.
Estate No. 34 - 1837. (Dated Sept., 1826 and settled February 2, 1837.

LEONARD HARBAUGH makes application for a guardian for his step-daughter, SUSANNAH IMEL, saying that her first guardian, NICHOLAS KNIGHT, is now dead and that PETER ____. Appointed guardian to replace Nicholas Knight, has declined to serve as guardian. He states that Susannah Imel is still under the age of 14 and is without any person to take care of her person or estate. On Sept. 7, 1826, JACOB KNABLE is appointed to serve as Susannah's guardian, who is the daughter of JACOB IMEL, deceased.

On Dec. 28, 1836, Jacob Knable turned over the account for settlement and the settlement on Feb 2, 1837 showed a balance due Susannah Imel of $91.74.

On Feb. 11, 1850, JAMES KNIGHT (husband of Susannah Imel) Petitions the court for a guardian for his minor children. Susannah died about 1845 and James Knight remarried ca 1846 to Hannah Harbaugh.

SOMERSET COUNTY, PA. COURTHOUSE. No. 17, 1850. Dated Feb. 11, 1850, Docket 11. (Petition of James Knight for a guardian for his minor children).

"To the Honorable Judge of the Orphan's Court of Somerset County:
The Petition of JAMES KNIGHT respectfully requests that his children: CATHERINE ANN, NORMAN, DANIEL, MARTHA and ZOLMAN KNIGHT are all minors under the age of 14 years - that they are entitled to a share in right of their mother, now deceased, in the estate of their grandfather, HENRY IMEL, deceased, and that they have no person legally authorized to take charge of their interests. He therefore prays your honor to appoint a suitable person as guardian for that purpose and he will be obliged."
(Signed) JAMES KNIGHT

DANIEL KNIGHT was appointed their guardian by the court on Feb. 11, 1850 and posted bond in the amount of $120."

Note: The death certificate of Daniel Knight (one of the above children) dated March 20, 1917, stated that his mother was "SUSAN IMEL".

Before continuing with the family of Susannah Imel, I am listing below a short history of the KNIGHT family, since the Knights intermarried with Imels on many occasions and the following history may be helpful.

From "KNIGHT TO REMEMBER" by Fannie Knight Geise, 11518 East 10th Street, Spokane, Washington 99206:

JAMES KNIGHT (1774 - 1832) came to Somerset Co., Pa. in the late 1700's and married CATHERINE KING in Somerset Co., ca 1799. Catherine was the daughter of PHILIP KING, JR. (1748 - 1818) and ANNE BROOKE (1751 - 1843). Their children were:
1. Rosa Knight, b. ca 1800. Married Christopher King.
2. Nancy Ann Knight. Married Joseph Mountain.
3. William Knight. Married Margaret Connor.
4. DANIEL KNIGHT, b. July 27, 1809. Married Mary Marietta. (Daniel was the guardian of Susannah Imel Knight's children above).
5. David Knight, b. Dec. 5, 1812. Married Catherine Crossen.
6. JAMES KNIGHT, b. 1814. Married (1) SUSANNAH IMEL and (2) HANNAH HARBAUGH?
7. Mary Knight. Listed in father's Will.

Note: Catherine King above was a sister HANNAH KING, who married the REV. NATHANIEL SKINNER, whose daughter, SARAH SKINNER, married my ancestor, JOHN IMEL, b. 1789, son of HENRY IMEL and MARGARET DISHER.
