Johann Michael HOH
He had 4 sons and 3 daughters, all sons emigrated to America. David Hay's book Pioneer Simon Hay gives 2 dates for the birth, 3 Feb and 2 Mar, 1711. This is the ancestor of both David Hay of Somerset, Pennsylvania and Dr. James W. Courtney of Murray, Kentucky.
He lived awhile in Berlin, Somerset Co, Pennsylvania where records are found in German Reformed Church for Elisabetha Gertrude b. 9-8-1777, baptised 10-9-1777; Anna Maria b. 10-10-1780 parents Johann Valentine Hay & Elisabetha Margaretha Poth. Valentine and family then migrated to Kentucky. Records are found in Henderson and Nelson Co, Kentucky; 1800 tax list, 1810 census and son Walter in 1820 census. Valentine's daughter Margaret married in 1785 in Nelson Co, Kentucky to Jacob Coffman. His other children who were born prior to the above named 2 were born in Scharrau, Palatinate. This indicates Valentin did not emigrate in 1767 with brothers Frantz and Simon (of Somerset Co) as stated in David Hay's book but after son Valentin who was born in 1775 in Scharrau and before daughter Elisabetha Gertrude was born in 1777 in Pennsylvania. According to Strassburger's list of arrivals he arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1775 on the ship King of Prussia. Death information obtained from a descendant, Dr. James W. Courtney, Murray, Kentucky.
Believed to have come to America ahead of his three brothers. David Hay in his book states he settled Shenandoah, VA and is ancestor of John Milton Hay (Secretary of State under Lincoln). Mrs. Gerald C. Hay questions his relationship to David Hay's Pioneer Simon Hay but agrees that he is the ancestor of John Milton. 1790 Pennsylvania census lists Adam Hay, Easton, Northampton Co, Pennsylvania. She has D.A.R. papers for this Adam. He is listed as (George) Adam Hay b. 1736, Easton, Pennsylvania d. 1818 Easton, Pennsylvania. Married Mary Elizabeth Wagener b. 1739, d. 1803 Easton, Pennsylvania, they married in September 1758. Adams place of residence during Revolutionary War was Easton, Pennsylvania. So he is not the Adam of this line. There is an Adam in 1790 Pennsylvania census for Cumberland Co, this may be the Adam that is the brother to Frantz, Simon and Valentine of Somerset Co, Valentine later migrating to Kentucky. 1790 Pennsylvania census for Monaghan, York Co lists an Adam Hay. West Virginia Revolutionary Ancestors compiled by Anna Waller Reddy, 1930, shows an Adam Hay, Berkeley Co, Virginia. (This is great grandfather of John Milton Hay.) Rent roll of Berkeley Co, Virginia 1774-1781 shows Adam Hay 184 acres, John Hay 368 acres. Tax lists Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania: Bedford Rates - 1770 - Freeman Michael Hay. (Could this be the Michael Hay we can not identify in Wood- berry Twp?) West Pennsborough - 1768 - Adam Hay 5 horses, 5 cows, 15 sheep, 1 negro, 200 A Patent, 600 clear. Lack Rates - 1768 - Adam Hays 1 horse, 1 cow, 150 A warranted, 6 clear. Lack Rates - 1769 - Adam Hays 1 horse, 1 cow, 100 Lot. Tyronne Rates - Adam Hays 100 warranted. Reconstructed census 1774 - 1810, Berkeley Co, Virginia: John Hay 368 acres, Adam Hay 184 acres. (Mrs. Gerald C. Hay questions the Adam Hay of Berkeley Co, Virginia is from our line.) Western Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania became a part of Bedford Co in 1771 and finally Blair Co in 1846. A 8/8/88 communication from Dr. Richard Hoh of Greifensee, Switzerland states "About him (Johann Adam Hoh b. 1738) in the ....diary of Adam Muller is said: he lived in Shanandoah Va." The notices in that diary were made about 100 years after the immigration of Johann Adam Hoh and it is supposed this is the recollection of descendants. The only Adam listed in the Passenger & Immigration Lists Index is Hans Adam Hoh, no age given, arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1752. Other listed persons by the name of Hoh were Johann George and Nicklaus. Persons by the name of Hay who arrived in 1752 at Philadelphia were Johann Conrad.
Tombstone states he was 99 yrs, 9 mos, 15 da. This is Pioneer Simon of David Hay's book. David Hay traced completely only line of this Simon. Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Society, Vol 6, No 6, page 427 contains the Bible Record of Simon Hay and descendants. It gives birth date of April 18 instead of Mar 18 and death date of 3 February instead of 2 February. He immigrated to America in 1767 with his brother Franciskus and his cousin Valentin.
Data supplied by Gwen Hay. Data augmented by information found at Somerset Historical and Genealogical Society library at Somerset, Pennsylvania. This data states he was issued a Land Warrant for 400 acres in Brothers Valley Twp. September 7, 1784. Survey record April 6, 1785 locates this tract north fork of Buffalo Creek, including improvement. (1876 Atlas shows it as farms of Henry H. Hay and Francis Knipper) Francis Hay, Jacob Fisher and Jacob Keffer, proprietors, laid out an addition to the town of Berlin between 1784 and 1787 known as the western portion. Francis Hay and Simon Hay were on the 1790 census record in Bedford County and on the 1796 tax list of Somerset County in Brothers Valley Twp. Francis Hay arrived on the ship Salley from Rotterdam at Philadelphia on October 5, 1767 with a Simon Hay (Pioneer Simon Hay) and a Valentine Hay. It has been generally assumed that Valentine was his brother, however, if this is the case Valentine would have had to return to Bavaria almost immediately because he had another child born in Scharrau, 28 November 1769. A letter from Dr. Richard Hoh dated 8/8/88 stated that the Valentine that came in 1767 was the son of Johann Adam (RIN-45) & Anna Eva Reb Hoh. Francis returned to Gerhardsbrunn in 1775 on business of the family and was unable to return because of the English blockade of our ports during the Revolutionary War until the war ended in 1783.
