Samuel Hay was not listed in 1910 census, his wife was listed as head of the household. Census information as follows: 1850 Ohio, Fulton Co., York Twp., age 5, born in Ohio. 1860 Ohio, Fulton Co., Clinton Twp., age 14, born in Ohio. 1870 Ohio, Fulton Co., Clinton Twp., age 24, born in Ohio, living with parents, married and had 7 mos. old dau., Sarah. Com. laborer. 1880 Kansas, Franklin Co., Hayes Twp., Farmer, age 33, born in Ohio. 1900 Kansas, Franklin Co., Hayes Twp., Farmer, age 53, born in Ohio, Nephew, John L. Hay, age 9 living with family. Middle name obtained from newspaper obituary for his daughter Lizzie Hay Stead. (His mother's maiden name was Biddle.) Death date and place of burial obtained through Mabel I. Hay of Ottawa, KS and from obituary in Ottawa, Kansas newspaper. Samuel served in Co K 130 Regt Ohio Vol Inf from May 31, 1864 to Sep 22, 1864 as a private. He was listed as absent, sick, at Beverly, NJ July 16, 1864. According to Reighard's 1920 History of Fulton County (Ohio) the 130th was organized in early May 1864 and reported to General C.W.Hill at Sandusky and after being mustered in was ordered to Johnson's Island in Sandusky Bay to guard rebel prisoners. On June 4, 1864 the regiment was ordered to Washington, D.C. From Washington the regiment went to Bermuda Hundred and was then ordered to Point of Rocks on the Appomattox where a Confederate attack was threstened. Later they returned to Bermuda Hundred and were employed in digging rifle pits. On June 22, 1864 the brigade had a sharp skirmish with the enemy. On August 11, 1864 they passed down the James River on the steamer "Keyport." At Washington the regiment entrained for Toledo where it was eventually mustered out. (Reighard's list of tropps lists Samuel Hay.) His granddaughter gave date of death as 2 March 1909, however, I used the newspaper obituary date of death.
Middle name obtained from obituary for her daughter, Lizzie Hay Stead. Place of birth, death place and date obtained from Mabel I. Hay and con- firmed by newspaper obit. The newspaper obit misspelled her maiden name it should be spelled with a "u" instead of an "ew". Lydia's older brother Thomas married Samuel's first cousin Nancy J. Hay and the correct spelling for the name was obtained from one of their descendants, Barbara Brooks of Marshalltown, Iowa.

This entry based on information given in 1880 Kansas census for Samuel Hay. He died at the age of 3, fell into well. Information obtained through Mabel I. Hay. Date of death and cemetery location furnished by Bessie Moore Denni. Tombstone was found leaning against a tree and photographed.

John Lloyd Hay was a nephew of Samuel B. Hay who was listed as a foster son on the 1910 Kansas census. His mother, Cyndarilla Hay, died when he was 2 years old which probably explains why he went to live with Sam & Lydia. He was 10 when his father Elias married again. Birth and death information obtained thru his daughter Mabel I. Hay.
He married Lydia Jane Bruster 28 Jul 1868 at Mattoon, Illinois . Lydia Jane Bruster was born at Coles, Illinois 4 Mar 1851 .
