                   Military service 1863-1864, Civil War, Union Army.  Service Record: Moses Altizer, Private, Captain Gilbert's Company, 7th Regiment Indiana Cavalry first appears on the company muster-in roll at Camp Shanks, Indianapolis, Indiana on 19 Sep 1863. He joined for duty and enrolled on 25 Jul 1863 at Madison (Indiana) for a period of 3 years and a bounty of $25.00 was paid along with a premium of $2.00. Captain Gilbert's Company subsequently became Company M, 7th Regiment Indiana Cavalry.  Moses was present on 31 Oct 1863 at the company muster roll but the company muster of January and February 1864 show him absent since 11 Feb 1864 and in the hospital at Memphis, Tennessee.  The hospital muster roll of Adams U.S.A. General Hospital for January and February 1864 shows Moses Altizer present as a patient.  The company muster roll and hospital muster roll for March and April 1864 indicate that Moses Altizer died on 12 Mar 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee.  The Muster and Descriptive Roll of Company M, 7th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry is a roll of detachment Deserters, Stragglers, and other solders, to whom transportation has been furnished (free) to specified points by Military Commanders stationed at Indianapolis contains the following information.  Indianapolis, Indiana, 9 Dec 1863.  M. Altizer born Indiana, age 19 years, occupation farmer, enlisted July 1863 at Jefferson for a period of 3 years.  Eyes Brown, hair light, complexion light, height 5 foot 9 inches.  Transportation from Indianapolis, Indiana to Cairo, Illinois. The company Muster and Description Roll of Men Transferred dated 19 Sep 1865 at Hempstead, Texas shows that Moses Altizer died at Memphis, Tennessee on 12 March 1864.  The Company M, 7th Regiment Indiana Cavalry Company Descriptive Book also shows Moses Altiser, age 19, height 5 foot, 10 inches, complexion dark, eyes black, hair black, born Switzerland County, Indiana, occupation farmer.  He enlisted 15 Jul 1863 at Madison by Lt Mayer for 3 years.  It also indicates he died at Memphis, Tennessee on 12 March 1864.
