                   Henry F. Miller
(born July 4, 1889 and died March 23, 1970)

Henry was the oldest son of George and Rebecca Miller. He was the onlychild of the family that did not marry.
After his father died, Hank helped his mother run the farm and raise thefamily.
* "Of all the Miller's except my father, I knew Uncle Hank the best. He

and dad helped each other when one of them needed help moving cattle, fixing fence, or repairing a windmill. In later years, after Hank retiredfrom farming, Dad and Richard farmed his land. Hank confinued with hispurebred Herford cattle for several years after he quit farming. Henrystarted Miller's Herfords in 1920. Dad and Richard bought the last ofHanks herd in the early 1960's.
My memories of Uncle Hank are many. He always spent Christmas with us. Ithink that Richard, Mike, and I looked at him as more of a grandfatherfigure rather than an uncle. He liked to tease us and always had a petname for eveybody. He also had pet names for Richard's and my children. He really enjoyed his nieces and nephews, as well as his great nieces andgreat nephews. He loved to buy them candy, ice cream, and/or ect., ormaybe give them a dime to spend when he saw them.
Henry always worked hard and was very thrifty when it came to spendingmoney on himself. He never had a modern house unfil he moved to Norcatur,in the early 1960's. It was hard for him to change with the fimes. Henever farmed with anything except horses. He believed in doing
things as they had been done in the past. He was a man with a schedule, although he never wore a watch. He did things at the same time eveydaythough, he went to town at the same time, come home at the same time, andstayed just so long at the sale barn. He never missed going to a sale atOberlin every week.

He was first in line on election day. He told me he hadntt missed votingsince he had been old enough to vote. I doubt if he ever voted for anyonebesides the Democrats. He didn't argue politics much, but he was a strongDemocrat.

Henry was a Precinct Committee Man for the Garfield Township in the1930's. When I was a committee man of Norcatur, he always made a donationto the party.

He also donatated to the Lutheran and Methodist Church, but I neverremember him going to church.

Uncle Hank liked baseball games, both local and listening to big leaguegames on radio and T.V. He was a Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed going'coon' hunting and did so as long as his health permitted. He kepthunting dogs, but coons were the only thing that he ever hunted. Hedidn't like people hunting pheasants on his land.

Henry was a big and robust man all of his life, right up until his finalyear of life when diabetes caused him to lose a leg. He wasn't the sameafter that. We visited him three or four times a week and Richard, Dad,and I took him to Hays several times to get an artificial leg fitted, buthe had lost interest in things and his strength and mind were failing.

He did spend his last Christmas with us in 1969, but he wasn't the sameUncle Hank of the years before, and we knew that he didn't have too muchlonger. He died the following March.
