Obit: Taken from the Muscatine Journal 27 November. 1911 Monday: JohnCoder Dies Near Cranston Iowa. Well known man died at home Saturdayafternoon. Funeral this afternoon from the Grove Christian Church nearthat place. The funeral of John Coder, of near Cranston, who diedSaturday, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Oak GroveChristian Church near Cranston, Rev. R. Boyce will conduct the services.Mr. Coder was born in Bainbridge, Ross County Ohio and was 70 years, 10months and 4 days of age at the time of his death. He came to Iowashortly after the close of the Civil War. On 21 February 1867 he wasunited in marriage to Eliza J. Fry, who survives him. He is alsosurvived by 2 sons and 3 daughters. These are Chester N. Coder ofCranston, W. H. Coder of Ottumwa Iowa, Mrs. Nettie Meeker of Cranston,Mrs. Lillie Hackett of Letts, and Mrs. Roie Welsch of Cairo Iowa.Another daughter Mrs. Ella Snyder of near Cranston died last April. Fourbrothers and sisters also survive. These being S. N . Coder of LeonIowa, L. G. Coder of Lake Township, and C. E. Coder and N. G. Coder ofLetts and Mrs. Sarah Idle and Mrs. Allie Van Horn of Letts. He was inthe civil war Ninety-first Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He served for 3years participating in many important battles and numberless skirmishes.He enlisted in the Cival War August. 11, 1862. Serving and a member ofCompany H. Ohio Vols' Inft. Principal active service was in Virginia andNorth Carolina. Was in the Battle of Winchester under the command ofGeneral Avervill and Crook, who under the leadership of General Phil.Sheriian commanding the federal forces against the leadership of GeneralJubal A. Earley commanding the Confederate forces. Discharged fromservice at Cumberland Maryland June 24th. Ref; Muscatine County Iowa m/cer.
Notes from her obit: She came to Iowa with her parents at the age of 10and has lived in this community every since. Her husband died 15 years ago. She is survived by thefollowing children Mrs. Nettie Meeker of Letts Iowa, Mrs. Roy Welsch (my June Welsch husbands Bobg/mother) of Moline Illinois, Mrs. Lillie Hackett of Letts Iowa, WillCoder of Ottumwa Iowa, C. M. Coder of Cranston Iowa. A daughter Mrs.Ella Snyder died several years ago. She is survived by 2 sisters and onebrother, Mrs. Eva Herrick of Muscatine Iowa, Mrs. Hattie Epperly ofMinnesota and John Fry of Letts Iowa.

She taught school for a number ofyears in Cedar Township, Muscatine County, and Concord Township, Louisa County Iowa. She graduated from Letts High School in 1899.
He married Eliza Jane Fry 21 Feb 1867 at Muscatine, Iowa . Eliza Jane Fry was born at Johnston, Somerset, Pennsylvania 31 Jan 1846 daughter of Henry Fry and Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald .
