James B. GATES

                   History of Nodaway County, Missouri, printed 1882 page 760.  James B.Gates, farmer and stock raiser, was born Oshkosh, Wisconsin, May 19 1851and is a son of S. G. Gates and Eva (Fitzgerald) Gates, the former afarmer by occupation, and a native of NY, and the latter ofPennsylvania.  When 3 years of age, James was taken to Muscatine CountyIowa, by his parent's, they locating 10 miles west of Muscatine Iowa.There he was principally reared as a farm boy.  At the age of 21, hecommenced on his own account, and moved on a rented farm.  In 1874 hecame to Nodaway County Missouri, and on the 26th of April 1874 he locatedwhere he now owns a farm of 80 acres, well watered and stocked, uponwhich is a young orchard of 225 trees and an excellent barn.  He hasearned his own way through life, and is worthy of his success.  On March31, 1874 Mr. Gates married Miss Minnie C. Moore, a daughter of John Moorea native of Jones County, Iowa.  They have two children Laura A. bornSeptember 23, 1876, and Lilly M. born November 18, 1880.  Mr. Gates is aRepublican.  He has taken great interest in educational matters and is awell informed man. He died not long after a horse kicked him in the bowels and head.Notes from obit;  He was converted when a young man and joined the UnitedBrethren Church.  At the time of his conversion he, with 60 others, wasimmersed in the Cedar River.  Of this he often spoke as the happiestperiod of his life.  He remained in the fellowship with his church untilApril 26, 1874, at which time he moved to Nodaway County, Missouri.Survivors are Laura Ann, Lillie Mabel, and John.
