Horatio Nelson GATES

                   Notes from obit;  When 3 months old he came with his parents fromWisconsin to Iowa where they settled on what is now the J. F. Williamsfarm on Sand Praire.  Later they moved into there own home known as theold Gates homestead now the home of O. A. Harvey, and here Mr. Gates grewto manhood.  He became railroad agent and telegraph operator for the oldB. C. R. & N. by whom he was employed for 25 years at various points ineastern Iowa.   In 1900 Mr. Gates returned to the home farm where thefamily lived until 1910, when they moved to Cranston Iowa and took up themercantile business in which he was engaged at the time of his death.About three years ago Mr. And Mrs. Gates lost their comfortable home andalso the store with all contents by fire.  They recently erected a finemodern building combing store and residence on the site of their home.Burial will be in the Oak Grove cemetery.  He is survived by his widow,and two daughters Mrs. Fred Washburn of Princeton, Illinois, and Mrs.Albert Brookhart of Letts Iowa and six g/children.
