Peter died alone in the primitive forest while loading a log nr Johnstown, PA.
His body was found at night by sons-in-law Jacob E. Faust (father of Alvin
Faust) and Levi Swank.  Wife Hannah was baptized into the Lutheran faith in
Stoyestown, PA, but when the family mvd in 1829 to Paint (then Shade) Twp in
Somerset Co., PA they united with the Ger Bapt Brethren (Dunkard), known since
1908 as the Church of the Brethren.  Here her father gave ground for the Berkey
Church and Cemetery and was the first to be buired there.  He died 24 Dec 1868
after months of suffering from broken legs sustained in the collapse of the
Penn. R. R. platform at Johnstown, PA.  The Berkey Church was the first ch. in
the tp and many Berkey and Studebaker descendants are buried there.  Parents of
Hannah Berkey, Daniel Berkey and Elizabeth Poorman, began life together in a
log cabin, worked and became builders of a brick home.  Remains still stand at
Brandy Wine Creek.  Peter and Daniel's widow settled large estate for children,
Elizabeth retaining a dowry in real estate.  Daniel known as "English Daniel."
