He lost his plantation and slaves to a gambling debt and moved West picking up a Mormon widow with 2 daughters in Nauvoo along the way. SLGS: SPRING 1982, SL School teacher Margaret is sealed to first husband The fortunes of his father did not continue but Edwards debts were paid by selling to his brother-in-law DOJennings,and after the Civil War the family lost everything as did all plantation owners of the South. Tazewell VA1850 census has him at 36 years of age or 1814 (Research):1850 Census lists Susy Ann 6, Mary I- 4, Susan E 2, and William 6 mos.

His wife was Mormon but he didn't join the LDS church until later in life and was always mad at his dad for loosing the plantation in Virginia to gambling. He forbade gambling in his home
He married Margaret Litz 26 Aug 1848 at Burkes Garden, Tazewell, Virginia . Margaret Litz was born at Burkes Garden, Tazewell, Virginia 17 Jul 1827 daughter of Peter Gose Litz and Sarah Gose .
