Per U.S. Census of 1920, form dated 5 JAN 1920, came from Indiana as did also
both parents. Occupation was bookeeper in the Hotel industry. He was aged 34 on
last birthday, so must have been born in 1885. Was renting a home (house?) at
517 South Border (Street?). This info from Ward Six, E 1/2, Hot Springs,
Garland County, Arkansas microfiche roll near end of roll.

Did not get along with spouse Nellie Pearl Alford's father, the judge. Left
family to go to Texas(?). Died in car accident(?). Age at time of Gary James
Powers Sr.'s birth was 39, per Gary's birth cert.

The Marriage Record Index for Garland County, Arkansas shows that in Book Q,
page 528 there is a record of a marriage between Alva O. Powers, age 25, and
Nellie Pearl Powers, age 21, on Nov. 26, 1910.

Curiosity: the Marriage Record Index mentioned in the paragraph just above also
lists a marriage on 13 Nov 1935 between an A. O. Powers, age 47, and Flora E.
Hall, age 31, to be found in Book 40, page 28. Alva would have been fifty years
old.

                   Gary James Powers Sr.'s birth certificate states that Nellie Pearl's age
at the time of Gary's birth was 34 years.
In the U.S. Census of 1920 on a form dated 5 Jan 1920 for Hot Springs, Ward
Six, E 1/2, her name is given as Pearl Powers. She is shown living as wife with
Alva O. Powers at 517 South Border (Street?). She was aged 29 at last
birthday, so she must have been born in 1890.
She gave Arkansas as her state of birth, and Texas and Arkansas as birthplaces
of her father and mother, respectively. This info can be found on the
microfiche roll for Garland County, Arkansas, near the end of the roll.

A book of tombstone inscriptions for Hot Springs, Arkansas shows a stone for
'Pearl Alford Powers' near other Alford family members. It shows dates for
birth/death as follows: Sept. 21, 1889/Sept. 7, 1933.

                   Baptized in the Los Angeles Temple on 20 October, 1998. Joseph Mark
Powers, his grandnephew, was proxy for the baptism as well as the confirmation.
Nephew Mark Alan Powers was witness to the baptism and performed the
confirmation.

Occupation: Vending machine operator

Was trained by US Army as a civilian radio operator and retained an
interest in radio throughout his life. Training in 1940's.

Started school in same year as younger brother Gary James due to
childhood sicknesses that kept him out of school for two years.
