CENSUS:1850, Sandy Lake twp.,Mercer, Pa.,25 July, p. 253 BIOGRAPHY:Letter from a cousin of Mary S. Zahllar Speidels, written in1925 telling where William Porter was born and raised to manhood, later movingto Mercer Co & marring Mary Hofies. He took up a farm at what is now the city of Sharon and a good portion of that city is built on his homestead, from William Porter's grandson, Vete Porter, of Mercer County, Pa. RELATIONSHIPS:WILL:Mention of Mary Priscella Porter in Will of George Hofius,Will Book 2, pg 351. Also mention of William Porter in papers in settling will. Couldn't find in 1860 census; did find Mary Porter living alone with daughter, Mary P. (Porter)Dean & Wm C. Dean. She was aged 69 then. William's father was Alexander Porter who emigrated from County Down, Ireland with his wife Margaret Braden (who he married on 12/1/1793 in Ireland County Down) to America in 1794. After coming to Mercer County he acquired 100 acres of land in Sandy Lake Township.. Alexander Porter died on 9/26/1847 in Sandy Lake Township and was buried in Porter Cemetery outside of Clintonville, Venango Co., Pennsylvania on Route T-305. Margaret Braden his wife was born in Ireland in 1778 and died on 5/25/1859 in Sandy Lake Township. William parents had 8 children (James, Margaret, William, David, Jane, Alexander and Mary were seven of the children. In the 1850 census William was shown as a farmer and $100 worth of real estate in Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. William and Mary had alteast 6 children - 3 sons and 3 daughters.

Pa, mentions "Polly" Porter as one of his daughters.Polly was used as anickname for Mary often in those days.William Porter mentioned also in the papers connected with the will. BIOGRAPHY:Personal Knowledge of G Granddaughter,Mary S. Zahllar Speidel. CENSUS:1870, page 69, dwell 120, fam 120, shows her at age 69 living with William C. Dean & wife, Mary P. (Porter) Dean. Twin of brother John Hofius. She married William Porter. Her father willed Mary and her five sisters all his personal property together with all money due to him per his will dated 9/20/1842 and registered on 12/6/1842 in Mercer County Pennsylvania. Her father called her Polly and she died before 1888. Mary and William had at least seven children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. Myra (Porter) Morford a teacher who taught in a small town about 75 miles East of Kingsley, Iowa was Mary (Hofius) Porter's daughter. Later Myra lived in Pomona, California.

BIOGRAPHY:Notes on notebook paper that we think Fritz Schmidt made saysthat Vete Porter is the son of George Porter & that Vete Marr Hettie? VetePorter is the cousin who wrote the letter of Oct 16, 1925 giving a lot of genealogy to Flora Gounis. NOTES: from Margaret Casler, where she went to this cemetery & copied info. Found a George W. Porter aged 27 with wife & child living in Jackson, PO North Liberty-Must be him. Need to write for marriage records. CENSUS:1860, Mercer Co., Pa, p 323, dwell 1153, fam 1084, DEATH:Letter of 1925 mentions that the only one living was Nancy Rice. George was a Magestrate. He is buried in Row 15 Section D Lot 2 in Oakhill Cemetery in Sandy Lake Twp., Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census for Sandy Lake, Mercer Co., Pennsylvania a Jennie Waters is shown as a daughter age 6 years old born in Pennsylvania.

NOTES:Sallie, as spelled in the notes is not listed in the census recordas a child in this family. However, in some notes which we have in the file which we think Uncle Fritz Schmidt made, Sallie is shown as a child & married a man named Vogan. CENSUS:1860, Mercer, shows a Sarah I. Vogan aged 17 married to a Stephen L. Vogan with a 2 yr old child and a 3 month old child. I feelthis could be our "Sallie" This is the only Vogan that would be about the right age in Mercer Co. DEATH:letter of 1925 mentions that the only one living was Nancy Rice.

BIOGRAPHY-DEATH:Letter from Cousin, Vete Porter mentions Aunt Nancy asthe only one living among her brothers and sisters in 1925. It says she lived in Franklin. BIOGRAPHY:Interview with Mary S. Zahllar Speidel, talked about hervisiting "Aunt Nancy when she,Mary, was not married-about 1929.Mary saids AuntNancy lived on McCalamont St.,in Franklin,Pa. Her married name was RICE. Nancy had a daughter Mary Rice,unmarried and a daughter,Sadie Monross who lived in Franklin.Sadie marr. J.B.Monross.Sadie had a dau named Beula Monross.Aunt Nancy marr William RICE.
He married Mary "Polly" Hofius 1827 at Mercer, Pennsylvania . Mary "Polly" Hofius was born at Salem Twp., Mercer, Pennsylvania, Usa 16 Mar 1801 daughter of George Hofius, Sr. and Jane Clark .
