W. Fletcher HOFIUS
Fletcher he was one of the first pioneers to settle in Kossuth Co., Iowas. He was listed as a farmer in the 1850 census of Mercer County, Pa. Soon after the marriage of Fletcher and Mary they moved to Illinois where they lived for four years. He and his wife Mary then moved to Kossuth Co., Iowa in the Spring of 1858. They lived in Union Twp., Kossuth Co., Iowa for 40 years. He was a prominent member of the Baptist Church of Algona, Iowa and was one of its founders. Fletcher who lived a long period of years up near the Black Cat came to the county in 1859, and made claim to that farm, but lived for a time before moving on it on teh Bullis farm, now D.W. Kins's east quarter section. He located on his own claim during the year 1862, but in a short time moved to Algona on account of the Indian scare which at that time was driving many people away from the county. The family then lvied for a few months on the Joe Thompson place east of town, now know as the old Lund farm. During the year 1863, they moved back to the farm where he lived until his death. The first real schoolhouse erected in Koosuth Co., Iowa was the one near the Schenick home built in 1860. Fletcher Hofius, who was the director for many year, was much respected as any settler the township ever possessed. This old building was moved to the Fletcher Hofius premises in later years, and is in use now as a hen house. Fletcher and Mary had seven children.
She was one of the pioneer ladies of Kossuth County, Iowa. Shortly after her marriage she and her husband came to Iowa. She was a active member of the Algona Baptist Church.
He lived in North Dakota. At the time of his brother George's death he was residing in St. Petersburg, Florida. He had 10 years of schooling and was affiliated with the Baptist Church. In 1915 he had lived in Iowa for 56 years.
He lived in Burt, Iowa. He was a Hardware Dealer.
George grew up and lived on the family homestead in Union Twp., Kossouth Co., Iowa. He had a rural school education. He farmed for sometime but 40 years ago, before his death, moved to Algona which had ever since been their home. He had an outdoor adverstising business in which he engaged for 17 years, but in 1937 he sold it to Frank Caughey. His later years were involved in operating the K. & H. gas station across the street south from the Legion building. He was a member of the Baptist church and in ealier life had been active in benevolent and social groups. The 1915 census for Kossuth Co., Iowa lists George's occupation as a carpenter.
He married Mary A. Thompson 18 Oct 1854 at Eastbrook, Lawrence Co., Pennsylvania . Mary A. Thompson was born at Ireland 16 May 1835 .
