Occupation: Stonemason Military: War of 1812 Settled in Irwin Twsp, Venango Co, . 1818 Bought 108 acre farm on Co. line-Butler & Vernango. 1838 bought farm of 250 acres Vernango Co which he divided among sons. Had 13 children Occupation: Stone Mason. Education: Military Service: Was a soldier in the War of 1812-14. Work Experience: One of his working experiences was with his brother John Theodore Hovis Jr., who both were stone masons, and helped build the stone residence at the north end of Clintonville, for Clinton McKee, receiving 85 cents per day for this skilled work. The house was still standing and occupied in 1965. Earnest like his brothers William & John T. Jr., names was changed from Hofius to Hovis. He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He came to Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1799, a year before it was formed from Allegheny and Lycoming Counties with his brother John T. Jr., & family. They all settled on John T. Jr.'s 400 acre farm. He later bought his own farm and settled on it just a few miles East in Irwin Twp., Venango County near the present site of Barkeyville, Venango County, Pa. As a soldier in the War of 1812 he was listed as the drummer under General Mead's Division, 132nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, comanded by Lt. Colonel Samuel Dale, Company 5, Captain Hugh McManigal, Commander at Erie, Pa. He was drafted as a Private for 30 days on 7/12/1813, with actual service beginning on 7/28/1813, as a drummer, and Honorably Discharged at Erie, Pennsylvania on 8/6/1813. He was paid for 10 days (7/28/1813 to 8/6/1813) and given 5 days travel time. Earnest and Margaret's pension number was WC 24846. As a grown man Earnest was 6 foot 1 inch tall with auburn hair and black eyes. After discharge from the Army he lived in Scrubgrass and Irwin Townships in Venango County, Pennsylvania. Earnest married Margaret Hoffman and they had 13 children. Most of the Hovis families were Methodists. There are numerous branches. His birth has been given ad 3-23-1774 per J. Information from Ginger Ralston, 1988 Daughter of John & Catherine (Ghost) Hoffman. age 92y, 15d at death Margaret and Ernest Hovis had 13 children - 6 sons and 7 daughters. Margaret under Widows Certificate #24846 received a pension issued June 1879 in Venango County, Barkeyville, Pennsylvania from her husbands military service in the War of 1812. She and Earnest were married by Rev. Reynolds. After Earnest's death she went to live with her daughter Nancy (Hovis) Fritz. Margaret came to Venango Co.,Pennsylvania in 1805. Margaret died at the home of her daughter, Elizabeth Vogus at Barkeyville. She was 92 years, 15 days old. Margaret was born in Westmoreland Co., Pa and lived there until she was 12 years old. She then came to Venango Co., PA with her father John Hoffman. She married Earnest at the age of 18. She was a member of the Clintonville Methodist Church for a number of years.
