BIOGRAPHY:Letter from a cousin of Mary S. Zahllar Speidels, written in1925
telling where William Porter was born and raised to manhood, later movingto
Mercer Co & marring Mary Hofies. He took up a farm at what is now the
city of Sharon and a good portion of that city is built on his homestead,
from William Porter's grandson, Vete Porter, of Mercer County, Pa.

Couldn't find in 1860 census; did find Mary Porter living alone with
daughter, Mary P. (Porter)Dean & Wm C. Dean. She was aged 69 then.

William's father was Alexander Porter who emigrated from County Down, Ireland with his wife Margaret Braden (who he married on 12/1/1793 in Ireland County Down) to America in 1794.  After coming to Mercer County he acquired 100 acres of land in Sandy Lake Township..  Alexander Porter died on 9/26/1847 in Sandy Lake Township and was buried in Porter Cemetery outside of Clintonville, Venango Co., Pennsylvania on Route T-305.  Margaret Braden his wife was born in Ireland in 1778 and died on 5/25/1859 in Sandy Lake Township.  William parents had 8 children (James, Margaret, William, David, Jane, Alexander and Mary were seven of the children.

In the 1850 census William was shown as a farmer and $100 worth of real estate in Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

William and Mary had alteast 6 children - 3 sons and 3 daughters.
