In the year 1837 Daniel Pennell, his wife Anna, Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, and David Potter organized, "A Society of Methodists" in the grove at the Hyde School house just south of Yellowsprings, then called Forest Hills. (the name was changed in 1853) Religion entered this community with the early pioneers from the surrounding territory, especially from the regions to the north and south. Services were first held in the houses, barns and groves of the community. Joseph Hill was the first Methodist preacher in Green County and conducted services at an early date in this vicinity. Rev. Hoosen, rev. Robert Cheney and others were pioneer circuit riders.
The local society became strong enough after the thirteen original charter members that by the year 1840 it erected its first frame building for services on the corner of Dayton and Corry Streets. This building was dedicated by Rev. Hammeline. The Yellowsprings society was a part of the Jamestown Circuit from 1840 to 1851. under the leadership of rev. Finley in 1851 the "Yellowsprings station was established. The latter part of that year. Rev. E. D. Roe was appointed pastor of the new station.
