Sir Thomas Wentworth was knighted for his bravery at the battle of Spurs 16 Aug
1513. Up to this period the successors to the estate of Wentworth - Woodhouse
were almost all only sons and most married heiresses. By this time therefore the
wealth of the family was enormous. Sir Thomas bore the nickname of Golden
Thomas.
