Francis Bryan, born in 1490 at his par ent's estate in Buckingham shire,
England, was the fourth great grandson of K ing Edward III . Sir Francis
Bryan and King Henry (Tudor) VIII were 5th Cousi ns (Half-First-Cousins)
by marriage.
Event: 1516 England - He became "Cup b earer" for King Henry VIII.
Event: 1520 Calais, Normandy, France - He attende d Henry at the "Field of
the Cloth of Gold." This was a four-week summit peac e meeting held at
Guines near Calais between Francis I, young king of France, and Henry
VIII, who distrusted the French.
Event: 1520 Rome, Italy - King Henry sent Francis Bryan to Rome to obtain
papal sanction for his divorce fro m his first wife Catherine of Aragon,
daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of S pain. This mission of course
failed because her nephew was Charles V, leader of the Holy Roman Empire,
who also controlled Pope Clement VII.
Event: DEC 1524 Greenwich, England - A captain and fifteen gentlemen
offered to defend C astle Loyal and its attendant ladies against all
comers. Sir Francis Bryan wh om King Henry called his "Vicar of Hell" was
among the group of gentlemen.
Event: 1539 Calais, Normandy, France - King Henry again sent Francis on a
mis sion, this time to Calais , France, to escort Anne of Cleves to
England where she became the fourth of Henry's six wives.
Event: 28 JAN 1547 England - The death of King Henry VIII. Sir Francis
was assigned the chief place as "Maste r of the Henchmen" at the funeral.
Henry fondly referred to Francis Bryan as his "one-eyed Vicar of Hell,"
which might be interpreted as meaning one of un questioned loyalty.
Residence: NOV 1548 Province of Munster, Ireland - Munste r, the southwest
province of Ireland that includes the counties of Claire, Co rk, Kerry,
Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford .
Death: 2 FEB 1550 in Clonme l, Co. Tipperary, Ireland - A postmortem
examination was ordered to determ ine the cause of death; poisioning had
been suspected. There was no finding o f poisioning. It was said that he
"died of grief". Sir John Allen, the Irish Chancellor was present at the
death of Sir Francis and at the autopsy. He sta ted that "He departed very
godly". While Sir Francis lay on his deathbed, his wife Joan went hunting
with Gerald Fitz Gerald along the bounds of Leinster, visited Askeaton
Castle, accompanies her lover to fairs and festivals.
Buri al: AFT 2 FEB 1550 Co. Waterford, Ireland - Sir Francis was buried
25 mile s from where he died. His stone marker was removed from the 12th
Century chur ch when the church was demolished in 1773.
Education: He was educated at Oxfo rd and received his first official
appointment in 1513 as Captain of the Marg aret Bonaventure, a ship in the
