John STITES, (DR.)

                   Death: Most records of John say he was 122 years old when he died. Family: NY Gen. & Bio. Rec. Vol. 28 p. 165.  He is reputed to be the projenitor of the Stites family in Amereica.  He is said to have come to America as a surgeon in Cromwell's time.  He settled first in New England, possibly Massachusetts, and then to Hempstead, Long Island, New York.  Tradition reccords that he was a man of astounding physique and wonderful physical endurance.  When nearly one hundred years old he walked forty miles in one dqay to visit some relatives.  He is said to have dug his own grave.  Note that the birth of his son Richard in 1644 would make his father 49 years old which leaves questions.
