William HELME

                   Birth, Marriage & Death: Paul Larkam, great Nephew.

    When he was young in Kansas, he worked with his father doing rope making.

    William was a very good artist.  I do not know where or if he received
training.  He wanted to strike it rich and worked in Leadville, Colorado with
his brother, James, in livery, lumber, farming, and photography hoping to do
prospecting.

    He went to Salt Lake City, Utah and later married a widow woman with four or
five children. She ran a boarding house in Salt Lake where he took his meals.
He was a master carpenter in Salt Lake. Later they had a farm near Provo, Utah.
Six of his paintings hung in a barber shop located on the west side of State
Stret near 5th street. The owner was Mr. Wardle, and the paintings were given
to his father, who was also a barber,  Some of Lillian's children resented
William later in life, partly because in the beginning, as a step-father, he
gave harsh discipline, but changed after he had a child of his own. They also
felt he married their mother for her financial assets.

    When they were older, the mother was taken in by one of her daughters with no
room for William. When he was ill with cancer, his sister Mary Ann Heineken,
sent her oldest son, Edwin, on the train to Salt Lake and took him to live with
her. He took many of his paintings with him to Kansas and some were sold to
help pay for his expenses. He died in Kansas, and is buried at the Nortonville
Cemetery.
