                   Information about Thomas Helme's birth was found on a cross stitch wall hanging of the family of William and Isabella Helme given to Verna H. Gorg by Paul Larkam, the grandson of Isabella Helme Mitchell. Thomas came to America with his wife, Sarah and two small sons from Liverpool, England on the ship "Swarba" arriving in Philadelphia, PA 18 May 1842,  The passenger list index was extracted as Thomas Helin. His wife Sarah is show as Mrs. Helin with son John listed as age 5, the other child as an infant.  It took many years to find. They lived in Allegheny City, across the river from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He filed a declaration of intention to become a citizen 22 Oct 1847 at Pittsburg, PA.  The family later went to Wyandotte County Kansas, near Leavenworth, Kansas about 1858. He owned land in Kansas that was mostly in timber.  He cleared very little of the land as he was a ropemaker.
