Corresponded with Dorthy for years but never did get dates of her and her family. She looked very much like my grandma but was smaller(shorter) She had a large family,10 or 12 children,2 dec. in 1959/60. We visited her in 1978 and had a grand time with her. She took us all over McDonald and Barry Co. showing us the cemetaries and places where the family's had lived. She said her children were afraid to meet us thinking we were uppity but she said we were "just plain folks." She gave me a pic. of my grandparents when they had their first child "Onel" 1900 census 1930 census McDonald Co. Mo. Center twsp. Dad lived 2 miles from our place on JJ highway(near Rocky Comfort) renamed from Kings hollow. Mom lived up Carlin Ridge. They had Leonard before marriage. Dad bought a new Hack, but he would not take it to get Mom..He rode his horse. They were going to something at Success,(thats where we took you to Highway 7 6 across at that old Churchhouse). Dad left his horse tied up and they walked. Mom told him she'd be right back and he waited. She went back home untied the horse and they went on to Church....,never telling dad for years. They got back after meeting and dad had to walk home alone. After that he'd bring his Hack to ride in. Mom told us that story lots of times. They lived in other houses in Kings Hollow. Across from our house they lived for 28 yrs. My brother bought that place. Lawrence sold them a house on South where JJ comes to E highway south to a house about 1 1/2 miles. Thats where they lived when dad died. We sold that after dad died and moved mom to Pineville. Then she got forgetful and bad health.. She was 62 before she ever went to a hospital. She had 12 children most without a Dr. She moved to Racine, Mo. Lawrence ran a home for Old Folks,(Gov't regulated). I can't remember how long. Joyce, Myrtle and I visited her on Friday for her birthday (87th). Then Sunday Buster and Zelda visited(the 22nd). On the morn. Dec. 24th they found her dead in her bed in her room, no one with her.Heart attack. My dad had cancer. The Drs. said he could live 6 months. He did not want to go back to the hospital His was lungs. Us kids,2 each night stayed with mom and always 2, daytimes. He died fast, could not help himself at the end and lived 8 mos. All 8 around the bed when he died. 2 in Michigan. I stayed nights and worked days. Joyce and Myrtle,Lawrence and Clarence and Buster days. Mom never learned to drive. She lived alone and did well until her heart. Drs. discovered she had a hole and only surgery then could be done in Texas and she refused. Dad always owned a saw mill and cut lumber. Mom off bared at the mill.(took the lumber away) All 5 boys worked until service time.(2nd world war) Clarence,Lawrence and Jr. was in World War 2. Clarence had been in Germany 2 yrs when he met Jr. on street.. Lawrence was in Japan. It made news around here. Mom and dad went to Michigan in 1953 and lived a year.,first public job my dad ever had as carpenters helper. Eileens husband clifford was a union carpenter."
