He was the postmaster for 17 years and held such public offices as side judge, school director, and representative to the state legislature. He was active in the First Congregational Church in E. As a young boy growing up in E. Berkshire, VT. he had infantile paralysis. He eventually walked again. He attended schools in E. Berkshire and joined his father in the family store at age 15. He continued to work there until his re- tirement in 1964, having taken over the business after his fathers' death in 1942. He was the 4th generation to own this store. He was active in the church and community and served as a supervisor of Avery's Gore for 10 years. [Berger 1974]
